An Essay on the movie Rudy about what made him be able to get on the Notre-Dame football team.
The movie Rudy is about a person named Rudy who wants to play football for the Notre-Dame Irish. Rudy has been told his entire life that he wasn't good enough, he was too small and that his goals will never come true. He dreams of playing on the team but since his marks aren't high enough his teacher didn't let him apply for the school. There are three main aspects about Rudy that helps him get into Notre-Dame and its football team, his decision making, goal setting and values.

Rudy's decisions were well thought out, letting him work his way into Notre-Dame. After Rudy graduated from high school he went to work at a mill with his father. In an accident at a mill his best friend Pete died in an explosion and after this explosion he went to a priest. The priest told him that his marks need to be very good for him to get into Notre-Dame and suggested that he go to Holy Cross till he can get his marks up high enough. When he started studying at Holy Cross he met someone who was willing to be his tutor. From him he found out Rudy suffered from dyslexia, a learning disorder which made it hard for him to recognize and comprehend written words. Finally after 3 semesters Rudy got into Notre-Dame and was accepted into the football team because of how he played, giving it his all and trying harder than most. Rudy didn't get dressed to play in a football game for about 2 years, then finally all the other players appealed on his behalf to the coach and he was finally got to play a game. Near the end of the game the players started to chant "Rudy" because he wasn't able to get on, at 17 seconds the coach played him and he tackled the Quarter Back. When the game ended Rudy was carried off the field.

Rudy set himself to hard very hard standards and tried desperately to achieve his goals. Rudy's main goal was to prove to everyone that he could get onto the Notre-Dame football team, but no-one believe him so he kept trying and trying. Once he realized that he couldn't get into the University with his marks he tried harder to get better marks. When he finally got into the school his next goal was to run through the team gates and have the entire crowd see him and he wanted to play so everyone would recognize him. He made the team but since he didn't have any athletic ability he wasn't able to play any games and he started getting frustrated. Rudy went to talk to the coach and asked if he could play one game and the coach said yes. After he phoned home and said that he would be dressed for a game he found out that the coach quit and a new one had been hired. Rudy didn't get played so he finally quit the team and Fortune told him that when he quit the team he regretted that decision to this day so he went back onto the team. On the last game of the season he wasn't on the dress list so everyone on the team went to the coach and said that Rudy should have his spot. The coach put him on and he finally achieved his life long goal of being in a game for the Irish.

Rudy had many aspects and values which enabled him to get onto the team, and athletic-ness wasn't one of them. Rudy was patient, hardworking and determined. He never gave up even when people kept on telling him he couldn't do it. When he finally got into Notre-Dame his parents were proud of him and supported him. Even when he himself thought that all his dedication was of no use and wanted to give up, his friend Fortune talked to him and convinced him to continue on his goal. He inspired many people and when he finally got to play a game everyone was happy for him.

Rudy was an inspirational movie, which is basically a video-biography, served the purpose of showing people that people can achieve their goals through hard work and determination. Rudy never gave up; he is a dedicated, hardworking and patient person which led him to achieve his goals. This shows how people can achieve many things as long as they believe they can do it and if their goal is realistic. Rudy is an inspiration to all of us.

    Hoosiers, Film Analysis

Let me first begin by saying I am a huge sports fan. I played almost every sport growing up and have always loved watching sports, in particular college basketball and any type of football. I saw Hoosiers a few times growing up and enjoyed it every time. In my opinion it is one of the greatest sports movies of all time. The acting of Gene Hackman is definitely an Oscar winning performance. Even though this is not based on a true story it is very believable to me that this event could have occurred, and for that reason it enhances the emotion I feel when they fight through diversity and win the state championship. All of the above are the reasons I chose this film, I knew I would enjoy it and enjoy writing about it.…

    Vince Lombardi

    • 1846 Words
    • 5 Pages

Vince Lombardi is regarded as one of the most legendary and greatest coaches of all time. Not only did he create winning teams, his philosophy and motivational skills were key factors to his success as a high school, college, and professional football coach. Vince was Italian and grew up in Brooklyn. His father owned a meat shop, and he made sure that Vince was a responsible young man and had him do work for him when he was not in school. Much of Vince’s philosophy and discipline as a coach was learned from his father in his younger years. His father told him as a young man that “There was only one right and wrong, and he believed that you only did the right thing all the time” (O’Brien, 1987, p. 23). Vince began playing football at the age of 15 and later got a scholarship to play at Fordham University. Although he did not have much playing time at the beginning of his career because there were players who had priority over him and the fact that he incurred several injuries in college football. He was among the linemen that became known as the Seven Blocks of Granite in his later college years. Vince believed in winning, and did not ever take losing lightly. While he was in college, he did well, but not above average in academics. He was a devout Catholic, and he did spend many hours studying to improve his academic scores. After Fordham, Vince played on several semi-professional football teams, but his small stature did not prove him to be a successful football player in the pros. Afterward, he accepted a job as an assistant football coach at St. Cecilia High School in Englewood, New Jersey. This was the start of a long coaching career that would prove Vince Lombardi to be one of the greatest coaches in history.…

Lombardi was very direct, yet he also had a strong sense of humor. He had a wide range of interests much like I do and was able to take something from each to bring back into his coaching. He seemed to exhibit a no-nonsense attitude and as much as he expected from his team, he too invested in them. His leadership principles can be applied to all walks of life. The first quote I read of Vince Lombardi’s that sparked my attention was “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” In my past there has been many times that this phrase has had significant meaning and helped me push through difficult situations. It reminds me that in life, we will always have a struggle, an obstacle, a roadblock at one time or another. It happens. The most important thing is to remember that we have the ability to get back up and keep going. I wanted to learn his steps to success by researching his past. I found that he was a normal person with a huge heart, courage, confidence and most of all the will. His teachings are so insightful and empowering, and he was able to make such a huge impact on the people in his life even though he had quite humble beginnings. I found it fascinating that both Wooden and Lombardi shared so many similar qualities even though their lives were at times dramatically different. The influence of parenting. The desire to learn and teach beyond the sports field. The ability to work hard and stay committed to a goal. To be able to live the life you are trying to teach. That being a teacher and coach are hand in hand. Practice, repetition and preparation are the three keys to winning as a coach and team. Whether it is the pyramid of success or the Lombardi code, both Wooden and Lombardi showed that in order to be a winning coach, you must first willing to learn and then to teach. There was no miracle work, no magic…

The character of Rocky Balboa was introduced to the American public in 1976, with several hit sequels produced following the original’s success. Rocky IV, one of my favorite movies starring Rocky, focuses on the boxer combating America’s greatest foe at the time, Russia. The USSR was at its peak, and with its supposed global dominance, the American people started doubting themselves, doubting America. In comes the hero, Rocky Balboa, who fights for America’s honor. Rocky has many characteristics of a standard hero, yet in some ways he breaks the mold.…
