Throughout close analysing we can see patterns in the occurance of seismic and volcanic activity worlwide. These patterns can be used as clues to help discover why such events occur, and it is clear that both volcanic and seismic activity is most abundant on and around plate margins. However despite there being a clear link between he events and the plate boundries does this constitute as evidence for the plate techtonics theory, or is it simply no more than a sub-factor of the theory. By looking at the position of seismic and volcanic events around the world we can very quickly begin to see lines and patterns of events that clearly correspond to the possitions of the boundries dictated by the plate techtonics theory. This helps to prove that the boundries themselves are actually present and is a very simple way of validating the theory itself. Furthermore the fact that only certain types of activity occur at different types of boundries such as sheild volcanos at converging plates helps to show that the movement of plates is different around the world and this can help to show which type of boundries are present and can be used to show interactions between plates. This once again despite being relevent to the plate boundries theory it is not useful in the proving of the theory. Another key part of the plate techtonics theory is how the plates move. Despite seismic action showing that the movement must be present as it is caused by the friction this does not help when determining how the plates move. This relies on the convection currents which occurs in the mantle and neither seismic nor volcanic activity will help to prove this theory. I feel that despite the activity of both seismic and volcanic being caused by the movement of the plates they can not be usd to prove the techtonic plates theory. In this case we must turn to to paleomagnteism and fossil evidense. Therefor i will conclude that volcanic and seismic activity are not very relevent in proving the validity of the plate techtonics theory.

Plate tectonic theory is a widely excepted theory that the Earth’s lithosphere is made up of plates, both oceanic and continental, which slowly move due to convection currents in the mantle and the asthenosphere. However, it is very hard to be certain as we can’t see the structure of the Earth, so some people do not agree with it. This theory saw the introduction of what we know today to be tectonic plates. Tectonic plates occur where there is radioactive decay in the core and temperatures are extremely high. This decay can occur anywhere in the earth’s core. This results in a plume of magma rising through the mantle creating a thermal current. When this current reaches the surface it spreads through the asthenosphere, before cooling and sinking. These are the convection currents which move tectonic plates. Convection currents will only occur in liquid form and in warm conditions. Tectonic plate theory has evidence to prove that these currents do take place. We know that the mantle is liquid and has high temperatures as magma that originates in the mantle is molten. This means that convection currents can occur.
