In the movie A Knight’s Tale, William and Jocelyn have a relationship that describes the true meaning of chivalry. There is not a specific characteristic trait that can make you chivalric, many circumstances become a factor when deciding if a person is worthy this title. Chivalric love and romantic love conform to one another, without chivalry there is no romance. However there can be chivalric love without romantic love.
A Knight’s Tale, takes the audience back to the medieval period, and gives them a visual of what knighthood would have looked like during this time. That is where romantic love comes into effect. Since a knight has been already honest and loyal, this chivalry characteristic provided building blocks for a relationship that have romantic love. Romantic love requires one person to be faithful and fully committed to his or her lover, but more than that it requires them to be attracted to his or her lover emotionally and physically. Since knights often times show chivalric love to everyone, this love and romantic love are to be put together as one so that they conform one another. Without chivalric love, romantic love does not exist, instead it would be referred to as romantic lust.
William proves his chivalry to Jocelyn in the jousting tournament by being faithful to what she tells him to do, and loyal to what she asks of him. It is not just bravery that makes him a chivalric knight, instead it takes bravery, faithfulness, loyalty, and nobility to earn such an honorable title. Finally the difference between chivalric love and romantic love is a person's actions instead of only their feelings. To obtain romantic love for someone you only need a heartbeat because it is based on what you feel emotionally and physically, rather than chivalric love which are actions you merely show
