Essay on Al Gores an Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore, is a documentary that tells us about Global Warming. He tells us, Global Warming involves solar radiation in the form of light waves passing through the atmosphere. Most of this radiation is absorbed by the Earth and warms it. Then some of the energy is radiated back into space, by the Earth, in the form of infrared waves. However during this process, some of the outgoing infrared radiation is trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere and warms it; which in return keeps the temperature at a livable and somewhat constant level. In this documentary Al Gore uses Logos, Ethos and Pathos to argue global warming, and the terrible effects pollution can have on our planet. This movie really gets you thinking about the environment and what we are doing to it. The facts stated and the information revealed has shocked many. Gore used many graphs and statements to show us that global warming does exist, and it is causing many problems for us and the Earth. For example, he had stated, "the top ten hottest years on record have occurred in the past fifteen years" (An Inconvenient Truth). This quote was an example of logos because he used facts and deductive reasoning to prove that the hottest year ever was the same year this movie was released in, which was 2005. You can imagine how much warmer it might be getting now! Also, it was shown that temperature increase is largely dependant on the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. He uses the heatwave in Europe i 2003 as a reference, which killed 35,000 people. Gore also talks about how all of the fossil fuels we are taking for granted, and not only is it hurting the environment that we're using them so much, our children may not have the same luxury people have today. Throughout the documentary Gore is targeting the people who want to know about global warming and those who need to make a change in order to stop the current, unrealized harm that global warming is causing. This is analyzed by the way he does his presentation. He performs his presentation in front of a live audience, an audience who is diverse. Diverse in the way that he has presented this slide show in many diverse places such as Aspen, Portland, London, Vienna, Italy, Spain, China, and South Korea. The presentation itself is an example of ethos, because Al Gore himself gave the speeches across the world. Gore also presents this slide show to people who want to know more about the situation. Which in return, we can assume that if the audience is attending his presentation, then they have little or no knowledge about the situation at hand and it is highly likely that they have not done much of anything in order to prevent global warming from becoming a future dilemma.
In conclusion, An Inconvenient Truth is a very important movie that talks about a major issue, global warming. What's happening to our planet is terrible, and it is the cause of our own ignorance. We are taking advantage of all of the resources that we have been given, and if we keep wasting them, they will one day be gone. I knew about global warming and how what we're doing affects our environment, but I had no idea it was on this large of a scale, or that it was happening so quickly. I do believe if anyone wants to help make a difference in the way we treat our environment, this movie is a must-see if you are interested in your well being.
