Conflicts and ambiguity occurs in group work as a natural process. Conflict should be taken into careful consideration and not be avoided. If conflict arises in a group, the group members and the group leader need to take the time and energy to work through the problem and come up with a solution. As a group leader, it is essential to become aware of possible conflicts that may arise during the group. A group leader needs to possess diversity awareness, since in includes several important factors, such as culture, age, gender, language, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, education, and ethnicity (Corey, Corey, & Corey, 2010). Ambiguity will occur when there is no clear meaning or understanding of what is being discussed in the group. Once a conflict is dissected and solved group members will feel a sense of group cohesiveness. The group members will feel they have accomplished something together, as a group (Corey, et al., 2010). Ambiguity does not always have to be seen as a negative part of counseling. Having aspects of counseling open for interpretation is an excellent way for group members to exercise their minds and come to an understanding on a topic.
