Humanitarian groups have applauded Italy for saving more than 115,544 lives from drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. In Italy, refugee rights are regulated by the 1989 Martelli Law. Refugees are vested with the same rights of education, healthcare and professional training as the Italian citizens. Refugees in Italy are also provided assistance while receiving loans for buying or leasing a house. Refugees are entitled to apply for Italian citizenship after residing in Italy for five year.
