In present days, anesthesiology is a very complex, yet everyday practice for putting people under while they undergo a surgery. In the 1860s this practice had just been developed; therefore, the simplicity was very evident. The most common use of anesthesia was through the use of chloroform, which was used in 75% of all operations. A chloroform soaked cloth was held over a patient’s nose and mouth until the patient was unconscious. The surgeon would perform surgery with the patient still unconscious, and soon after the surgery the patient would regain consciousness. It was not as efficient as the way doctors now use anesthesiology, but it was still very efficient in regards to the time period and only had a mortality rate of 0.4%.…

From my research, the average anesthesiologist make around $150,000 to $500,00 annually, depending on where they live. However, this salary comes from at least eleven years of college. The anesthesiologist I contacted had two extra years for training. The eleven years involves an undergraduate college degree that includes pre-medical requirements, four years of medical school, and at least four years of anesthesiology residency. The anesthesiology residency also requires a one year medical or surgical internship followed by three ears of anesthesiology training. Anesthesiology residents face multiple exams during each year of residency except for the first year. These exams include physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and other sciences from medical school.…

Some patients are uncertain about the outcome of a surgery. When a patient is anesthetized for surgery they feel no pain, but they still maintain consciousness. Many fully anesthetized patients have a sense of being able to recognize and to perceive sounds when they hear both doctors and nurses alike talking in the operating room. In an experiment at the University of California Medical Center, eleven patients were given commands that were of a non- threatening nature by researchers while they were under anesthesia. While under anesthesia they were told to do a simple task like pulling their ears, and they were checked for compliance during a postoperative interview. In addition, surgeons gained more knowledge about the human body through dissections that became allowed by the church around the mid-14th century (Lambert). The revolution of anesthetics wasn’t introduced until the 19th century; however it became a critical advancement in the field by allowing patients to receive pain relief by inhaling ether. This became especially important at this time, because new procedures such as the tracheotomy became a less intense procedure with the use of anesthetics. Options other than ether soon became available, such as chloroform, cocaine, and Novocain (Lambert). The surgical revolution didn’t end here, many technologies allowed for surgery to become a much more technical process. The 20th century led to the first eye surgery due to the invention of the laser, as well as improvements in heart surgery that led to the pacemaker, heart transplants, and artificial hearts (Lambert). In spite of all the groundbreaking steps that were made in this field, new steps are still being taken today. There is a new outlook that could prove to advance the field of surgery even further, and it is known as robotic surgery. Due…

I have wanted to be an anesthesiologist since I was in eighth grade. I did a lot of research on it and came to an agreement with myself that I will indeed become an Anesthesiologist, work in a hospital, and wear a white coat with my name and an M.D at the end of my name. I love everything about anesthesiology, I get so excited just thinking about it. The thing I would enjoy the most about this job would be the ability to make anesthetics that would ease an individual’s pain during surgery and during the recovery period. The thing I find the least appealing would be the irregular hours of an Anesthesiologist. Anytime during the day or night, I could get called into a surgery to monitor a patient’s heartbeat, blood pressure, etc. If I do become…
