Fishing bait is a generic term for any type of substance or material which is used to attract fish to a fishing hook or line. Traditionally, before fishing became a modern sport, anglers would use anything they could get their hands on for example; worms, flies, small bait fish, night crawlers and insects. As the times have changed and some people’s opinions of fishing with live bait have changed, so has the variety of bait that has become available.
Nowadays, you can get bait almost anywhere, including fishing shops and the internet. Some older fishermen tend to still, even to this day, find their own bait and physically look for worms and flies. As times have changed, so has the bait and the …show more content…
bait which is now readily available can be placed into two categories; live bait and artificial bait.
Artificial bait is commonly used by fisherman, sometimes an angler just prefers to fish with a lure only and no bait.
This type of artificial bait will most likely not represent anything found in the natural habitat of bass, this is what the fisherman thrive off as an unknown creature within the territory of the bass is more than likely going to get attacked and hunted.
Artificial Lure
Natural bait is normally used by the older, more experienced fisherman. Natural bait can consist of anything that the bass would normally hunt for. As soon as the bass gets a whiff of the insect or baitfish, they will be on the hook, faster that you can say ‘Live Bait’. Strangely enough, fish is sometimes used when fishing as it leaves a smell within the water, which lures bass. When fishing in freshwater, earthworms are the most common live bait used however, maggots, grubs, bees, flies, ants and even roe are excellent and effective live bait.
red worm
As live bait has become extremely popular, people have tried to take advantage of the situation and set up ‘worm farms’ producing a variety of worms used for live bait, on a giant scale. This means that the fishermen do not have to get their hands dirty searching and digging in the back garden. Depending on the country, season and climate, various worms can be
used.
In 2007, a disease was spread throughout the states of America caused by the bait fish being produced on a mass scale. The disease was known as Whirling’s disease and was caused by deadly organisms being spread between ecosystems, from one fish to another. This disease hit Michigan and so many other states within the United States. Regulations have been put in place in order to prevent the disease from coming back, so make sure before going out to a lake that you are in tune with the local rules and regulations on baits.
