Booneville is a city in Prentiss County, which is located in the northeastern corner of Mississippi. Prentiss County was founded in 1870 and was named after Seargent Smith Prentiss. Booneville is the county seat of Prentiss County, Mississippi. It was incorporated in 1861 and was named after R.H. Boone, a relative of Daniel Boone, the early American pioneer. The Boone family settled here in 1859. By the year 1850, the region comprising the county became populated with emigrants form Virginia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Alabama. These settlers were mainly Anglo-Saxon or British. The land of Booneville was bought by B.B Boone, G.W. Williams, and W.P Curlee from the Chickasaw tribesman Le-Ho-Yea. During the American Civil War, the Battle of Booneville took place on July, 1 1862. Confederate General Braxton Briggs tested the power of his army by attacking Union forces there. This battle ended in victory for the Union and would lead to the promotion of Phil Sheriden, a Union hero.
Many large Victorian homes were built along with white-frame cottages. The homes in Booneville are well-maintained, on one-two acres of land each. Mostly older buildings are located in the downtown area, which are two-three stories high. There are homes on the east side of town that are not well maintained and grass gets really high during the summer. Booneville is home to Northeast Community College, which has made the demand for more apartment complexes to be built. The civic organization has been an important part of the growth here. Booneville is also called The City of Hospitality. While interviewing an older resident here in Booneville, he remembers that there was not much here before the new development started with the Junior college being here.
