Now all final pieces of the rocket are ready. They were to be sent to the Kennedy space station by train. All pieces took a year to put together and test. The astronauts were getting picked to go up into space. These astronauts were very …show more content…
privileged. The astronauts were Dick Scoby, Sharon Christa Mcaffaulie, and Gregory Jarvis, Judith A. Resnik, Ronald E. McNair, Mike J. Smith and Ellison S. Onizoka.
The commander of the flight was Dick Scobee. Scobee served a tour in Vietnam. This is only Scobee second mission on the shuttle.
The pilot Mike Smith, grew up on a chicken farm in North Carolina was also a decorative pilot who served in Vietnam. This is his first journey in space.
Mission specialist, Ron McNair, who was a cotton picker as a boy had big dreams for his future. He had also received his doctoring in physics at Massachusetts institute of Technology.
Mission specialist, Judy Resnick, she had received a doctorate degree in engineering.
Mission specialist, Ellison Onizoka, grew up in Hawaii. He grew up to be an engineer. This is his second space flight.
Payload specialist, Greg Jarvis, was a satellite engineer to many air craft.
School teacher, Christa Mcaffaulie, A teacher at New Hampshire high school. She is the first ordinary person to fly in space. Christa had two children, a boy and a girl, And a husband who she had left behind to peruse her dream only to find there were problems with the rocket. She had left behind family and school children who had watched the challenger take off with her in it and watch her die.
Christa was getting on the rocket when she had second thoughts but then she said she was being silly and could not miss out on this big opportunity she had been waiting for her whole entire life. As her school children watched her fly away she knew she would miss them. They had celebrated for her in the library when all of the sudden the rocket exploded. Nobody really noticed any thing and kept chattering when a teacher told them to be quiet. There was dead silence and the teacher had told them what had happened. Children went home early. The father unwillingly told his children. Missing their mother many people came to comfort them. With many people mourning over these seven astronauts’ deaths the NASA space was grounded for three and a half years. This means that NASA is not allowed to make any more rocket ships or plan any flights for the next rocket. After The Kennedy space station was grounded seven people quit their job and three people were fired because they could not make enough money for their families. These people were furious at the Kennedy space station. Many people lost lots of money during the grounding.
Summary:
The summary of the Challenger explosion was that the o ring was broken and loose, and there were other malfunctions than just the o rings.
Conclusion: the Challenger was a rocket ship built in November 21, 1975 and finished in February 14, 1978 which is Valentine’s Day. After the challenger was built it was put through a couple of tests that it had succeeded through. The challenger was successful all they needed to do now was get it to the Kennedy Space station The challenger had four delays in all. One was the wind was too high in certain places which could cause a problem. The second was that when the crew got into check out the shuttle and the door got locked behind them. They got out in about 3 minutes and then this problem occurred again. The last problem was the temperature in Florida or the landing site was not good. Then once they got all of their problems dealt with they were ready for the takeoff. The people knew that there was a gap but they ignored it and when the 73 seconds were up the right O ring exploded causing the fuel tank to break open and the gas to catch on fire. When the booster first caught on fire none of the ground control caught
it. When the ground control caught it they had lost radio signal with the rocket which landed in the Atlantic Ocean. The challenger was found 6 weeks later under the water of the Atlantic Ocean. It was under by 100 ft. Then Divers found the bodies and remains of all seven crew members. Their families were later notified of their findings. Identifying them was the hardest part of all of it though because they were so burned up and practically grilled to death. During the week of the astronaut’s funerals, some of the divers that found their remains gave their respect even though they didn’t even know these people. The divers were very polite. It’s been years since their deaths but some people still remember the day of this horrible tragedy. Many people hope that another tragedy like this will never happen again.
