Creature Welfare is the position that animals should be treated humanely. This includes proper housing, nutrition, disease prevention and treatment, responsible care, proper handling, and humane euthanasia.
Creature Rights is the position that creatures should not be exploited. Some believe that creatures should not be used for food, clothing, entertainment, medical research, or product testing. This includes the use of animals in zoos, circuses, rodeos, and even as pets. They believe it is ethically, morally, and inherently wrong to use animals for human purposes under any circumstances.
In 1828, the first anti-cruelty law was passed in the United States. the legislation stated: 'Every person who shall maliciously kill, maim, …show more content…
or wound any horse, ox, or other cattle, or sheep belonging to another , or shall maliciously and cruelly beat or torture such animal, whether belonging to himself or another, shall upon conviction, be adjudged guilty of a misdemeanor'.
In the 1970's the modern fauna rights movement increasing when a British housewife, Ruth Harrison, published a book callled 'Animal Machines: The New Factory Farming Industry'.
The main points of the book were the use of antibiotics, hormones, and additives in creature feed and modern factory farming in which chickens were kept in cages and veal calves were kept in small crates. After this creature rights took off. Though some progress has been made, in my opinion, there has not been enough progress.
Do Creatures have Rights?
Creature Rights Activists believe that creature have the same rights has humans. They believe any use of a creature by a human reflects a bias that humans are superior to animals. This is called specieism. They belief that because creatures feel pain, it is wrong to use them for food or research. On the other hand, creature welfare advocates believe that creature should be treated humanely and given the necessities of life. Concerning research, creatures should only be used when no other option is available and it should be done humanely.
Other issues of concerns are should creature be used for food or potion making, should creatures be used for experimentation. and should hunting and trapping be allowed. Should a creature be killed for its parts, or even one
part?
Before forming your own opinion on these issues, it is important to research the topics carefully. The issues are more in depth that what is mentioned here. Sources of information should be critically evaluated for accuracy and bias, taking care to separate opinion from fact.
