Victims of crime victimization are more reluctant to report their crime to the police or other law enforcement affecting policing and the National Criminal Victimization Survey report. The police and the public are co existing together to mitigate crime and help the innocent victims. The police are not as effective in reacting to crimes when the victims do not report the crimes to the police. In a recent study a massive “54 percent of violent victimizations are not reported to the police” (Ranapurwala, pg.2). The victims vary based on gender and race. The lower poverty neighborhoods and races other than whites are more likely to be resistant to reporting a crime to the police due to the treatment they are perceived to receive by the police. A rift in the relationship between minorities like African-Americans, Hispanics, or low income neighborhoods can be warranted by the police’s reaction to crime in the impoverished neighborhoods. Police respond to crimes differently amongst minorities rather than white communities which can affect the relationship between minorities and the police force. Compared to the white communities the “police services are not as robust or effectively delivered to minority groups” (Ranapurwala, pg.2). Crime victimization continues because of the treatment and lack of acknowledgement the lower income feel from the police.
Those who do not report their crime to the police may not have done so for a range of reasons. The victim may have some other involvement in crime and fears being arrested, the victim does not trust the police, that offender has a relationship with the victim. The study showed that “less than half of the victims reported their victimizations to the police” (Ranapurwala, pg. 11). Reporting crime is an important deterrent in mitigating crime and better outreach to the victims is the
