Designer Babies & “Eggsploitation”
When women take their eggs and sell them money is defined as eggsploitation. Designer babies are babies that are created from taking different genes from different eggs and putting them into one egg to create the “perfect” child. Designer babies and eggslopitation go hand and hand because both concepts are trying to control life. This concept came about when Jacques Cohen pioneered a promising new technique for helping infertile women have children. Many people claim that scientist are trying to play God when attempting to design and create their own babies, therefore, this can be looked at morally wrong. When …show more content…
Scientists are intelligent but, human, making them vulnerable to mistakes. A gene vital for survival may be unintentionally tampered with, our bodies are complicated, which creates room for things to go wrong, and side effects of tampering. The insertion of a copy of DNA may interrupt the function of another gene crucial for survival (Arnold). Viruses are also more difficult to control because there is low genetic and biodiversity, meaning if a virus is deadly one person, others can catch it and have the same effects. Mothers that want to experiment with eggsploitation will suffer even more from levels of hormone changing so rapidly (Demma). Moreover donors are nearly killed because of the traumatic process. Attempting to change the cycle of life will always have consequences, some unintended effects are genetic malfunctions that can hurt future generations and the baby not coming out exactly as planned.
Designer babies play a huge part in Frankenstein. By victor attempting the play God, he failed and created a beast. Victor was clearly devastated and ashamed when he states, “I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body… I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished,, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart.” (Shelley) because he invested so much time and effort into his experiment but only profited a disaster. Just like Frankenstein
