Dirty Pretty Things was written by Steven Knight and directed by Stephen Frears. I watched this film over the weekend at the comfort of my home. The film is about Okwe (Chiwetel Ejiofor) an illegal immigrant from Nigeria who works as a cab driver and also a hotel attendant. He shares a small apartment with a Turkish illegal immigrant Senay (Audrey Tautou). One evening, Okwe is called up to one of the hotel suites. Inside, he finds a toilet that is clogged with a human heart. This leads him to the hotel manager (Sergi López), and he soon discovers that his employer is butchering illegal immigrants for their kidneys in return for a passport. In Dirty Pretty Things the writer and director wanted the audience to learn to rise above limitations. Both Okwe and Senay were wanted immigrants in London. They were forced to belittle themselves in order to survive as immigrants. Even though Okwe was a doctor in Nigeria, in London he was treated insignificantly. He
had to work multiple laborious jobs in order to survive and make a living. If Okwe did not rise above the struggles he faced on a daily basis, we would not have been able to survive as an illegal immigrant. Okwe stayed on the right path by working hard even if it meant not getting any sleep. The illegal business his manager offered him did not sidetrack Okwe. Instead, he stayed true his morals even if it meant he had to work hard and not take the easy way out. The message of how important it is to rise above hardships and daily struggles was clearly portrayed by Okwe’s lifestyle. The writer and director wanted the audience to relate to the main characters obstacles of being limited to possibilities but still rising above all the restrictions. The film Dirty Pretty Things made me feel inspired.
I felt inspirited by Okwe and his ability to make the best out of every situation. He did not allow his hardship to bring him down, which is a life lesson the audience can take away from watching this film. Many situations came up where Okwe was in difficult positions, but he did not lose hope. I did not realize the obstacles illegal immigrants have to overcome especially when their employer takes advantage of their situation. Being limited to choices can impact our important life decisions. Okwe chose the right path of working hard even when could have taken the easy way out by being a part of his managers illegal business of selling kidneys. I learned that it is better to stay true to your morals rather than going after materialistic things. Even though I cannot relate to Okwe’s lifestyle, I can relate to the message being portrayed. Regardless of what is standing in our way, it is crucial to rise above the obstacles but not forget to stay true to
ourselves.
