Can a disability and a chronic illness coexist?
After reading this particular question, I immediately answered yes. According to our textbook, some degree of disability is usually present in severe or advanced chronic illness, limiting the patient's participation in many activities (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. 132). I have battled a chronic illness for eight years now and have personally dealt with a chronic illness and a disability at the same time. I am not disabled, but there are times that my symptoms are so severe they are debilitating and affect my everyday life. There is no cure for Crohn's disease but it can be controlled with medication therapy, and sometimes surgery is used for more severe cases. Having a chronic condition or disability can affect your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
Identify and states two legal and/or ethical implications:
Patient and families need to understand the need and the importance of ongoing promotion and screening for illness or disability (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. 140).
The patient needs to adhere to recommended treatment regimens (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. 140).
Identify and states two actions the RN can
implement:
Educating the patient and family on how to alleviate and manage symptoms (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. 136).
Making sure the patient understands the importance of carrying out regimens as prescribed (Hinkle & Cheever, 2014, p. `136).
