Domestic Violence in America

There are five different kinds of domestic violence in America today. Many that even I didn’t realize are part of everyday occurrences. Within those five are sub categories and within those are the actions that fit into them. Once you look at the types, you begin to wonder how often they occur, which leads to the question of how often domestic violence occurs in America overall and where to we stand stats wise to other countries around the world.

The first type is physical domestic violence. This form is the one we hear most about in the news. All throughout American history, we find that domestic violence is extremely common. A perfect example of when this was would be slavery, only the it wasn’t illegal. The second type of domestic violence is psychological. I have found that the youth of America endures this the most. The third type is emotional and women and children are put through this the most in America as well. The fourth form is one that most people don’t realize is domestic violence but it is and that form is economic domestic violence. This is often found in relationships in which two people are either married or living together and sharing the financial responsibilities. The final form is sexual, and this is the second most common in American life today. Both women and men endure this form of violence.

Currently, statistics have shown that women are 78% more likely to become victim to sexual assault and rape. Stats have also found that 85% of domestic violence victims are women. One statistic that shocked me was that one out of twelve women have fallen victim to stalking.
