Simply put, doodling is thinking in images, or put another way, doodling is a type of visual language. When the brain is in the “linguistic mode”, certain areas of the brain that are normally stimulated by images, lay dormant. By engaging in doodling, these other areas of the brain become active, giving you new perspectives when analysing problems or information. Try it for yourself, the next time you’re having difficulties with a problem. Try to express the problem you have as a doodle, you’ll be surprised by the different ideas your new perspective will give you. Doodling can be done at any time and anywhere. Just grab your pen/pencil and draw a continuous line across your paper, curving round and overlapping the line as many times as you wish. This repetitive action that requires no thought is super fun, just simply making shapes and best of all, it’s so relaxing. When you’ve finished with your continuous line, try filling in the shapes you’ve made with colour, choosing whichever colours you’re naturally drawn to. Doodling is so satisfying and great fun.
