Six Tips for Working with Home Care Aides
Bringing in an elder care provider to help reduce your caregiving load is a great way to reduce the stress you may experience as well as provide home care companionship and assistance for your parent. Whether you have hired a senior care provider to be a live-in companion or to only make a few visits a week, it is important to clarify your expectations and to develop good communication with the home care provider, so you can easily monitor the care of your parent.
Clarifying Roles
It is extremely important to understand what the elder care provider can and cannot do. For example, a home care provider is typically able to help your parent with personal hygiene tasks, such as bathing and dressing, but they are usually not able to provide medical treatment, including wound care. It is also important for the in-home care provider to understand your role as the family caregiver. For example, if your parent has trouble getting out of bed in the morning, you should communicate with the senior care provider to let the know that your parent may not be up and ready for the day when the home care provider arrives.
