During the Holocaust, millions of Jews were brutally murdered in Nazi concentration camps; however, when the camps were liberated, there were many survivors. Among these survivors was a boy named Elie Wiesel. Elie was only fifteen years old when his family was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and after facing the horrendous events of the Holocaust, Elie has written multiple books depicting his struggle, started a foundation, stood up for other injustices, and inspired my own moral compass. There are countless numbers of documents and photographs depicting the Holocaust’s existence; and there are many people in the world that accept its existence. there are people who do not believe that the events ever occurred. By writing books about his experiences in the Auschwitz concentration camp, Wiesel has stood up to the Holocaust deniers. Wiesel’s book Night is a story that tells the horrifying sights, sounds, and smells of Wiesel’s experience at Auschwitz. By documenting his struggles, Wiesel is standing up to the unjust claims made by the Holocaust deniers by providing more proof of the Holocaust existing. Rather than being afraid to relive his struggles, Wiesel shares his experience with the rest of the world in order to show everyone that the Holocaust did in fact happen. President Jimmy Carter appointed Elie Wiesel as Chairman of the President’s Commission on the Holocaust in 1978; two years later, he became the Founding Chairman of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.
He is also the president of the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, an organization created by him and his wife to fight injustices and intolerances. Wiesel is an active supporter of Israel; however, he has also defended the cause of Soviet Jews, Cambodian refugees, victims of genocide and famine in Africa, Yugoslavian victims of war, as well as countless other causes. A survivor of great injustices, Wiesel has devoted his life to fighting for others against many other injustices, and that makes a person a true hero. Before reading Night, I did not have a wide knowledge of the extreme conditions faced by the Jews during the Holocaust. Now that I have read about the experiences, I have realized how awful the Holocaust really was, and that those who were affected by the events deserve to have someone on their side. Elie Wiesel has taught me to always stand up to those being treated unfairly no matter who they are. He has transformed my personality from someone who chose to lay beneath the radar to someone who will always stand up for what is
just.
