A child can be moved between homes multiple times, and nobody will be there to stop the constant movement for them. Some of the children endure physical and emotional abuse during their time in the foster system, and the ones that cannot endure the abuse tend to run away from “home.” The vast majority of these children go their whole lives without knowing who their birth parents are because the files are sealed shut to keep anyone from gaining that knowledge. At the age of 18, a foster child should be granted access to their birth records because the information could give them a form of stability in their lives and it allows them to learn more about who they truly are. Although the core of this claim is true, it lacks support because the chances of both parents being deceased are very slim, and most parents could not turn their child away if they were contacted by them. There’s a bond between the parent and child, no matter how much time has passed since they’ve seen each other, that would almost never allow a parent to deny contact from the child they created. Would you be able to turn your child away? In conclusion, foster children need to receive access to their files for the main purposes of having stability in their lives and to have the opportunity to fill in the missing pieces of their past. Foster children are human just like all of us, so why should they be treated any differently than the rest of us?
