In my life, I cherish the importance of respect. Respect is very important to me because I have been raised in a respectful environment. My parents have raised me to be respectful to everyone, no matter how they treat me. For my family, to respect each other is to take feelings, thoughts, needs, and preferences in to account when making decisions. We exhibit this through our daily family lives. I show respect at school for my peers and teachers. When someone is talking in class, I do not talk, when someone is giving a presentation, I am not on my phone, when the teacher is talking, I listen. My friends and I respect each other. From past experiences I have learned the real meaning of respect. This word is more powerful than one can imagine. With respect comes unselfishness. When people respect others, they are treated equally. My mother and father always told me to be tactful in the way I treated others, so I would also be respected. It has worked in the past and will always hold true in the future. If someone respects another with proper judgment, people feel good inside which gives them a sense of integrity. When I give respect and witness how it makes others feel, I feel like more of a person. I feel proud. Honored.…

Another way our values manifest in our society through the clothing we wear and how we look. This simple choice can show others if a person values preparation and good impressions. I express my values the same way. The way I present myself is very important because it immediately exemplifies values that I hold dear, such as being prepared and well kept. I also express my values through the way I talk. My word choice reflects my values of respect for other people. One of the most important ways I show my values is in the decisions I make. What does respect mean to you? To me, respect means following the golden rule. It means treating others with kindness, love, generosity, and having polite manners. “Treat others as you would like to be treated.” That is the golden rule, is it not? Who wouldn’t want to be treated with kindness? Who wouldn’t want to be around someone with manners and cleanliness? Respect is being considerate to others and their feelings and beliefs. Respect isn’t just for others though, you need to respect yourself as well; take care of yourself and be presentable. If you would like to be treated with respect, you, first, need to learn to respect yourself and others. Once that is accomplished, others will learn to respect you.…
