Essay On Holden Caulfield's Past Events
Holden Caulfield’s past events have affected his present actions, attitudes, and values of character in both positive and negative values. Some many notable past events that affected him in the future without him knowing were; when he didn’t take Pencey seriously and got kicked out of it for his grades, also when him and Jane were close friends and Stradlater brings her up, also when he gets a prostitute ordered to his house, and lastly when his little brother dies from an illness. All these past actions put Holden in either a positive or negative situation in the future, without him even realizing it. Deaths in a family are very difficult to deal and control with, nobody wants to ever be in that situation, but unfortunately we …show more content…
Well Holden is no different. When he starts getting emotional and feels depressed a man in his hotel’s elevator asks “Interested in having a good time, fell?” (Pg. 102) Holden was so depressed he didn’t stop to think and realize what he meant so he agreed to it. A few hours later a prostitute around his age shows up to his room. She enters the room and immediately starts taking off her clothing. Holden starts to realize that he doesn’t feel “sexy” but is in a more depressed state. He declines the intercourse, but will still pay her for coming, but the problem is that he only pays her ten dollars instead of fifteen dollars. Well, little does Holden know, a negative situation will meet with him tomorrow morning. A knock on his door wakes him up in the morning. It’s Maurice and Sunny, they want the rest of their money. Holden doesn’t want to give in, and thinks he is being chiseled out of his money. This makes Sunny mad and starts to physically beat him. They end up leaving with Holden’s five dollars. This is just another example of how a past event can positively or negatively affect you without even realizing it. In this case a negative present experience occurred because Holden agreed to have a prostitute arive in his room without him really thinking about it, because he was just so distracted by his chronic

Holden Caulfield is J.D. Salinger’s main character in The Catcher in the Rye. We learn several interesting things about Holden, however, while learning the these we are not experiencing or seeing what Holden is. We learn about it through Holden’s perspective throughout the entire story like, for example, the death of his younger brother, Allie or the time James Castle committed suicide by jumping out of the school window. Most of these experiences have a significant meaning behind them and we find these out by reading the book. We get to know Holden in a personal way. While reading, comprehending, and understanding Holden’s emotions towards the encounters he has with the characters in this book, which makes it very interesting.…

Holden Caulfield is seventeen year old caucasian male from New York City who recently has flunked out of another private boarding school then ran away and spent a weekend alone in the New York City drinking heavily. Caulfield describes himself during this week as being fed up and done with all people. From a rational perspective, nothing Caulfield did or thought during this week were the actions of a lucid person. Because of Caulfield’s impulsive scattered thinking he is clearly a threat to himself. My diagnosis is that he is suffering from both an anxiety disorder and posttraumatic stress disorder, luckily there are treatment steps he can take to help cope with his issue, these include medications and different types of psychological therapy.…

Holden is the second eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Caulfield. Mr. Caulfield is a lawyer, and his wife, a homemaker. He is one of four children born to the couple and his relationship with his parents and siblings appears to be normal. Preliminary interviews indicate that Holden had idolized his older brother, D.B., throughout his childhood. The patient also appears to have a close relationship with Phoebe, his youngest sister. Holden’s other brother, Allie, was two years his junior and died of leukemia on July 18, 1946 (page 38). Tragic as this loss was for the Caulfield family, it seems to have had a greater impact on Holden than on any of the others. He was thirteen at the time of his brother's death, and upon hearing the news, broke all the windows in the garage with his bare fists. Holden’s parents report that his personality underwent a radical change following Allie’s death; among the most notable changes, they list a decline in…

Holden Caulfield is the protagonist and the first-person narrator of the book. I liked the narrating style of this novel, it used common slang terms that Holden and most teenagers would use. The narrating style makes the story seem realistic and gives a detailed capture of what is exactly going on in Holden's head. The repetition in the book set the tone of Holden, he repeatedly used words that lacked concern. The diction in this book gives hints about what time period this story is taking place in before the specific year is actually revealed. Holden uses words such as dough to mention money and says grippe when he talks about the flu. These words let me know the story took place in the mid 1900’s.…

Holden Caulfield, age 17, was brought to me, Dr. Joseph M. Guerrieri M.D. at Sutter Center for Psychiatry, by his parents as a result of his recent behaviors. Holden is a 6‘2” tall and healthy young man. In multiple therapy sessions he has brought up his family and friends. One family member in particular that was brought up was his younger brother, Allie, who passed away of leukemia when Holden was 13 years old. (Salinger 49) Allie’s death seems to be the root of Holden's behaviors. Since the death of his younger brother, Holden has not been able to cope with the loss and can not find happiness. This is why I believe Holden Caulfield is suffering from Clinical Depression. Clinical Depression is initiated by a sudden lose or major change in one's life. (Depression Center | Symptoms & Treatment 2017) This sudden change was undoubtedly brought upon because of the loss of his younger brother.…

In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, seven year old Charles Baker Harris, also known as Dill, is shipped from Meridian, Mississippi to Maycomb, Alabama to stay with his aunt, Miss Rachel. His recently-divorced mom and his step-dad pay little attention to him; they buy him toys to play with in his room, so not to bother them, and they send him off to Maycomb during the summer. In J.D. Salinger’s coming of age story, The Catcher in the Rye, protagonist Holden Caulfield comes from a very wealthy Manhattan family that sends him to different boarding schools, no matter how many times he flunks out. There are numerous similarities between Dill and Holden, namely the hardships they each face, including a great loss of innocence.…

There were recurring patterns Holden unconsciously fell into that contributed to his depression and then there were events that halted these depressions. The events that contributed to his depression were that he judged people, he judged himself and he did not take care of himself. Of course there were events that halted the depression such as the act of love shown by his sister Phoebe. Love is perceived as forgiveness, peace, living in the moment and happiness. His sister is the only person in the book who shows these characteristics. As for Holden he never doesn’t experience love at all, he is always depressed and is never really happy in the book. Except when he is with his sister, he feels happy and is in the moment.…

For example, just as Holden came back from drinking at the Wicker Bar, he talked to Maurice, the elevator operator and agreed to pay Sunny, a prostitute for sex. After Holden makes the decision he comments, “It was against my principles and all, I was so depressed, I didn’t think” (91). Holden has an internal conflict; between narrator Holden and in the moment Holden. Holden’s internal conflict shows he made a life changing decision without thinking about the consequences till much later in life. Holden is a virgin, therefore if he had sex with Sunny it would be the first time he had sex. Holden is an unsympathetic character in this moment because sex is a very sensitive subject and Holden made a choice without thinking about the consequences. Therefore, readers have a lack of sympathy for Holden because Holden had to choice to respect himself but he chose not too. Another example is when Holden called Carl Luce, his former student advisor at Whooton school. Holden stayed late at the bar after Carl left. Then, Holden decided to walk to Central Park, “I walked all around the whole damn lake-I damn near fell in once, in fact” (154). The motif of falling displays Holden’s poor choice of drinking which could have been a life-changing moment. If Holden fell in the lake he would have died…

Holden Caulfield is a phony. Even though the story is being told from his point of view we can conclude that he is fake. Not only is he an impulsive liar but he is a great hypocrite. He has no remorse about any of his actions towards people, and everything and everyone he meets is a phony in his eyes. Holden Caulfield can never say anything truly good about anyone, he always has something to bring them down. Even little things upsets him, like when Mr. Spencer, Holden’s old teacher at Pencey Prep, “started going into this nodding routine”, he said “You never saw anyone nod as much in your life as Old…

The admission of this patient has proven to be yet another impulsive action made by desperate parents. This patient, although exhibiting many symptoms of depression and grief caused by the death of a loved one, is not showing any signs of serious mental illness or instability. He is obviously an independent individual, rebellious as well. He is not hesitant to make known his opinions and thoughts. He seems to be a very cynical individual, most likely resulting from previous events that have occurred in his life. Though he doesn’t mention it much, he seems to be deeply affected by the death of his brother Allie Caulfield. He seems to miss him greatly, which could be the cause of the contemptuous attitude shown in his behavior. In addition, he witnessed the suicide of a fellow classmate a few years ago. Although they were not close, this is still a very traumatic event and can deeply influence one’s life, especially when witnessed at a young age. The patient does not seem to be at all motivated by anything except for his family. He especially seems unmotivated about school. This may be the result of seeing the death of a classmate caused by torment at school. Seeing an extreme negative result of school may have caused a similarly negative attitude toward it. Caulfield doesn’t speak much about any friends that he has, though he mentions some of his old roommates and classmates from previous school years occasionally. While Caulfield exhibits behavior that may be interpreted as depression by many concerned parents, it is nothing more than the typical effect of teenage hormones. The patient may seem like he has some sort of mental instability, but this impulsive and reactive behavior is simply a product of pubescent hormones mixed with his natural rebellious actions and attitude.…

In the Catcher In The Rye, Holden Caulfield is a sixteen year old junior who has just been expelled from Pencey Prep. Although he is sensitive and intelligent, he finds the hypocrisy and unpleasantness of the people around him almost unendurable, and through his mistrust, he tries to protect himself and those whom he cares about from the pain and harsh reality of the world. However, the disapproval that Holden has with people around him is also aimed at himself. He does not like opening up and is very uneasy about opening about his weaknesses. There are many signs that Holden is troubled and undependable: he fails out of school, he shows a lack of interest towards his future, he is unable to connect with people and he is hospitalized and is visited by a psychoanalyst. Holden habit cannot be explained because he feels that there is no meaning in life. Doing so, the way Holden approaches people changes throughout the novel. Towards the end, he regrets telling his story at all, which shows that he is cautious about change and in denial about maturity and change. Holden is so afraid of losing people that he purposely pushes them away.…

A common question asked since J.D Salinger wrote and published the book The Catcher in the Rye is, is Holden Caulfield an sympathetic or unsympathetic character is he a protagonist or an antagonist? I believe Holden is a sympathetic character that just has a weird way of expressing his feelings and may have emotional and psychological problems. Even though Holden has had problems expressing himself and a few setbacks in life that doesn’t make him an unsympathetic or a bad person. Personally, I believe Holden just is literate and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind although some of the negative things he would say would outweigh the positive things he said and most readers would focus or remember the bad things. In this paper I will show everyone Holden’s emotional side and sympathetic aspects on life.…

Patient Holden Caulfield demonstrates signs of depression brought out by Allie and drinking, isolation brought out by phonies and lack of social skills, and lying tendencies brought out by his determination to protect his reputation and the innocence of children. The death of Allie promotes Holden’s depressive states, while his drinking behaviors attempt to cover it up but make it worse. Also, Holden’s isolation is enhanced by his hatred towards people who are phonies in society and his lack of communication skills. Lastly, lying is induced by the need to enhance his self esteem and make him look good, as well as his determination to protect children from losing their innocence. By Holden experiencing depression, isolation and lying tendencies,…

When Holden plays the role of an adult, rather than lives the life of a sixteen year old, things go wrong. One example of this in the story is when Holden arranges to get a prostitute from Maurice the elevator man at the hotel. This is out of character for Holden, who is normally a shy person and one who normally treats women respectfully. Sixteen year old teenagers do not normally hire prostitutes. Things go wrong for Holden when Maurice and Sunny claim Holden owed them five dollars more. When Holden refused to pay, Maurice punched Holden in the stomach and took the money. This shows a good example of how things go wrong if Holden tries to act someone he is not.…
