Finally, there discussion on the family member physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. The purpose of this essay is to conduct an interview with a family member and develop a holistic care plan in which will address the care of the individual as a whole. This will support the family member health and allow them the opportunity to heal.
Demographic
An interview was conducted with Mrs. V.H., a close family member over the phone concerning their health status and present concerns. Mrs. V.H. is thirty nine years old and she currently lives in rural area in which only has one hospital and one doctor’s office. Mrs. V.H. reports “I do not feel comfortable going to the hospital or doctor office when I am sick. I would rather and have to travel nearly thirty-five miles away to seek medical attention. The hospital and doctor office are not equipped to deal with my current health situation” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016). Mrs. V.H. was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type II, asthma and hypertension since the age of nineteen years old. She was a single mother and had to work at an industrial plant to take care of her four daughter since the age twenty-one. Mrs. V.H. was employed at the plant for thirteen years until the company had to close down the facility. Over the past five years Mrs. V.H. asthma became uncontrollable and she developed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. “I had to follow up with a lung specialist and I found out that I had a spot on my lung in which maybe asbestos and the doctor is linking this to the industrial plant in which I was employed at” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016). Mrs. V.H. voice concerns about her health declining and the community in which she lives is not equipped to deal with her current medical illness. She stresses the issue of traveling so far to obtain proper medical treatment, but Mrs. V.H. believes the trip is worth the cost of her health.
Coping Patterns Mrs. V.H. reports at times having asthma attacks when she is exposed to certain irritates such as strong smells perfume or air fresheners and dust. “I always have my rescue inhaler handy and I know how to avoid certain fragrances but sometimes I cannot necessary avoid when people are checking out in the grocery line in front of me. The smell hits me all of a sudden and I can feel my chest tighten up. I think the worst attack was when I was at home alone and had a really bad asthma attack. I can remember praying and I had to go outside and say to myself God watches over his children. This was a scary moment for me but I finally came out of it” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016). Mrs. V.H. reports having problem with breathing when walking short distance and this is a result from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The doctor has put her on a steroid pill daily called prednisone. This has caused her to gain thirty pounds in one year and Mrs. V.H. blood glucose levels ranges between two hundred and fifty to sometimes as high as five hundred. “I am concerned for my current health and weight gain. My personal health goal is to lose twenty pounds in six months and to have a better control over my sugar levels” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016). Mrs. V.H. stated that she had a really good family support system. During the week, she walks with her daughter around the community as least three times a week. Mrs. V.H. has a total of four daughters and they are very concern for their mother’s health and often take turns with going to the doctor’s office with their mother to keep abreast of her current health condition. Mrs. V.H. reports “I pray every night for my health and I believe one day God will free me from my sickness” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016).
Four Aspects As previously mentioned, holistic nursing care involves the patient as a whole and this includes their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being (Doosey and Keegan, 2013).
Mrs. V.H. physical states of condition is between good and fair. There are times in which she may experience difficulty with breathing while walking short distance. Mentally, Mrs. V.H. is determined to lose weight and stop taking majority of her medication. Mrs. V.H. is hoping that one day, the only type of medication she will be taking is her inhaler. “I find the struggle for me losing weight and controlling my blood sugar is being on prednisone every day. I have a strong faith in the almighty God and I believe he will heal me from my illnesses” ” (V. Holmes, personal communication, May 27, 2016). Mrs. V.H. reports there are times in which she may experience anxiety attacks related to stress of not being able to tolerate shorter distance of walking. Inspite of the Mrs. V.H. current health condition and changes with her physical body over the years, she still believes God will heal her health and give her the strength she need to get well
soon.
Conclusion
In nursing, the holistic care, involves providing the necessary plan for treating the patient as a whole. After conducting an interview with a family member, Mrs. V.H, she provided information regarding the past and present health status. She also discussed some of the concerns with the community resource and support needed to cope with her current health condition. Also, there were some coping strategies through spiritual, physical, and mental practices by Mrs. V.H. in which helps her to cope with some of the symptoms related to her current illness. As Mrs. V.H. utilizes these strategies, this will allow her to heal and regain control over her current medical condition.
