The houses were built at minimum cost and this means that the rooms are small. Thus special furniture was designed in order to fit into these small houses and to provide sturdy, economical, and good looking furnishings for the new residents. "Instead of following the conventional pattern of designing the house from the outside in, Resettlement architects have built primarily from the inside out." (House Beautiful 1937) Miss Elizabeth Hofflin, the technical consultant for the Resettlement Administration, was quoted as saying "We made the furniture to fit the small rooms of these low-rent units. We found that ordinary living room furniture would overflow from wall space and block doorways and windows." (Daily News, April 20, 1937)…

Although Americans like to think themselves better and more economically stable, there is still a great need for public housing within the United States. If these developments were to be constructed with the concerns of the environment in mind, then the developments would not only be environmentally-friendly, but they would most likely be cost efficient. In Carbon Nation, there was an emphasis on renovating the Empire State Building using greener, cleaner methods. Although such techniques may be more expensive at first, those in charge of the projects were more than aware that the costs of such environmentally friendly efforts would pay for themselves. If these methods were to be used in public housing, then more developments could be built, and the cost of operating such housing would also…

This includes potentially lethal communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and influenza, as well as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. (O’Connell, 2005) “On average, about 700 homeless people die from hypothermia each year because of the lack of clothing to keep your body warm.” (Adney, 2010) All these homeless people dying leads me back to my global perspectives. In each of the stories we read and in the movie we watched, technology is stronger than the humans, and has taken over the way people think and behave. The first story we read, “There Will Come Soft Rains”, technology was the only aspect left on earth. The house, which is considered the main factor of the story, has its own knowledge through technology. It has human-like qualities, as it announces daily housekeeping tasks on routine. Each appliance would perform normal duties, and serve as a helpful use as if a family were living there.…

    CSR: Bottle brick houses

We are a Non-governmental organization lead by a group of students that aims to improve the quality of life in developing countries by offering communities more comfortable and durable housings. We focus on providing cost-effective, environmentally friendly buildings by substituting the conventional use of bricks with “bottle bricks” that includes the use of recycled bottles. It is estimated that one house made of these bottle bricks costs only about a third of what a similar house is made of using concrete and bricks. Furthermore, not only are the bottle-bricks houses made more affordable, but they are also made more durable than the conventional houses. The bottles packed with sand act as insulators against heat, thereby making the house suitable in warm weather climates such as in Nigeria or in Cambodia. In addition, the compact sand plays a significant role in making the house bullet and fireproof, as well as making it earthquake resistant. As a result, we aim to provide these resilient houses to as many families and communities in need.…

Thesis A home energy audit revealed that we can reduce home heating costs by $500 a year. Our home heating costs were high because of poor insulation, drafty windows, and an inefficient furnace. Homes using passive solar energy have lower heating bills than others. Higher heating costs have made architects design more energy-efficient homes. Lowering home heating costs is easy if one follows three basic steps. People who own older homes should have an energy audit to find ways to reduce heating costs. Heating costs can be reduced by using fossil-fuel alternatives: solar, wind and geothermal. Reducing heating costs not only saves money, but it also increases the value of a home and helps the environment. Installing solar panels will help reduce heating costs, but they are unsightly and expensive.…
