Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines best as “better than all others in quality or value.” When talking about sports, it is difficult to establish which one truly exhibits the best, either in quality or value, and why. I believe ice hockey is superlative because of its complexity and difficulty, requiring players to exhibit extremely difficult skills with the finest timing, strength, and precision, as well as how it brings family and friends together. I have spent countless hours watching, playing, and talking about hockey with some of the people I am closest to. For me it is clear, there is no greater sport than hockey. I’ve met some of my best friends by playing hockey with them. After ten years of participating in this sport, I still play with and am still friends with many kids from my first team. Similarly, watching hockey brings people together nearly as well as playing it does. The NHL is on almost year round, so my family often has friends over to watch the big games. I’ve watched my favorite team, the Chicago Blackhawks, win the NHL championship (The Stanley Cup) three times, each time surrounded by my favorite people. Also, pond hockey is another great way to spend time with friends. It doesn’t carry with it the stress of the what the outcome will be, unlike real games, but it allows people who are serious about the sport to get out and play instead of watching the game on TV.
