A social institution is a system in our society that has sets of statuses, roles, and groups that makes a society function. These institutions have a common group of people that come together to complete some common goal. These institutions have sets of norms and structures that support society's success. Just like in any set of groups or roles in our society, there is institutional injustice. Institutional injustice is different from other forms of injustice because these institutions have injustice in their statuses and roles in them. This statistic seems minuscule, but in reality it shows that different groups do not get the same treatment in the criminal justice system. Examples like Freddie Grey, Michael Brown, and Sam Dubose are used in riots to try and make the point that color is a factor in criminal justice. People of color that find themselves in prison, normally come from a family of low income which makes it harder for the families to get lawyers and advances in getting their family members out of prison and keep them out. I can agree that people of color are looked at more harshly than Caucasian people for the fact that normally people of color are who commits more crimes. But opinions like that are how we get to having the statistics of more people of color in prisons. If we were to change stereotypes like these people would have to lose there preconceived ideas of people of different ethnicity when it comes to crime. The injustice in the criminal justice system would be an exceedingly hard intuition to change. Since most criminal institutions are run by the state, the roles and statuses within the institution wont be easy to change. Those within the institution feel it is their duty to keep prisoners put away. This mindset is something conditioned by the institution to continue to make money for the state.
