Intersectionality is the critical understanding and recognition of the ways in which oppressive institutions are interconnected. The concept was first coined in 1989 by legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw, and is largely used in critical theories- especially that of feminism, when discussing systematic oppression.
The term acknowledges that varying structures and degrees of intensity in oppression are interrelated, shaped by the interaction of different identities (e.g.,race, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, class). The group understood that their lives and forms of resistance to oppression were largely shaped by the simultaneous influences of race, gender, sexuality and class, the members challenging the analyses emerging from Black and male-centered social movements, as well as those from mainstream feminism, having been dominated by white, cis, middle-class womn. Understanding Oppression
Oppression takes different forms in different cultures, countries, communities, families and relationships. By exploring oppression on all levels, we are able to build a better understanding of oppression, and how it effects us, and how we, as individuals, are capable of contributing to the oppressive systems.
Internalised- the individual’s private ideas of superiority and inferiority, reflecting that of prejudice, xenophobia, and privilege. People who are the targets of oppression also begin to believe the prejudices directed against them.
Interpersonal- the bias that occurs when people bring their private beliefs into the interaction with another. Public expressions of prejudice, hate, bias and bigotry between individuals.
Microaggressions- the intentional or non intentional snubs or insults, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to marganalised persons.
