Reasons why your period may be irregular
Your period is not always predictable. Some women have their menstrual cycle every 28 days, whereas others may have longer cycles, or no cycle at all. It isn’t always a problem, but sometimes, it can lead to a diagnosis
How do I know mine is irregular?
Irregular periods are defined as cycles that are more frequent than every 21 days, or last longer than 8 days. You may also be irregular if your period is missed, early, or late. TO count your cycle, count from the last day of your last period to the first day of your next period, for three months. Take care of yourself, but don’t overdo it. Your body needs energy to have a menstrual cycle and if you are exercising to the extreme, your body is using up that energy.
Age. When you are young, your body usually is irregular until your hormone levels balance out. When women age, toward menopause, periods may become irregular.
Medical Diagnosis
PCOS or Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - This condition causes the ovaries to create multiple, tiny cysts on them, making ovulation difficult. Those with PCOS have higher levels of testosterone, the male hormone, which can lead to infertility and irregular periods with anovulation.
Thyroid disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, fibroids, diabetes, endometriosis are examples of medical conditions that can be associated with irregular periods.
What should you see the doctor?
To be sure you are not pregnant, if you had sex within the last month, take a pregnancy test, that might be why you missed a period. Most women do not care if they have irregular periods, until they want to have a baby. If you consistently have irregular periods, see the doctor sooner rather than later. There are medications for PCOS, and other treatments for conditions like a thyroid
