Essay On Machismo
I layed in my small blue bed placed next to the window in the dimly lit room, savoring the sweet, delightful sensation of the sun warming my skin that sent small, tickling sensations through my entire body. I layed there, with eyes wide opened, waiting patiently for the sound that would initiate my morning chores. Once I heard the “cock-a-doodle-do,” I would jump out of bed, grab my miniature sand bucket that was placed on the kitchen table, walk out of the metal door of my house, and would then down the cement stairs, getting a glimpse of my grandpa’s pigs and chickens along the way to the molino. Once the maza was made, My mom and I would make tortillas, releasing the concoction smell of breakfast through the air. After this, I would sweep the house with my custom made broom tailored to my …show more content…
My desire for being in the medical field that was once a possibility transformed into a reality over my journey through the struggle of the machismo present in my Mexican culture. My desire for knowledge expanded and influenced my involvement in medical programs for the past summers. My passion for a higher education augments day after day, like a wildfire was set free. My lust for knowledge and rebellion of a culture constructed of machismo has made me determined, competitive, and self-reliant; challenging the latent belief so strongly portrayed in Mexican culture. If I was given the choice of whether to go back to the cave to live without the agony of truth or to experience discomfort and grow accustomed to the light, I would choose to be outside the cave and to not analyze the world from just one perspective, but instead from multiple ones. My plans are to be a role model for my siblings and other girls from the same culture that deal with the same hardships and to enlighten them about what it is to truly be a woman in a complex, modern world where the possibilities are

Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…

    Summary of Masculinity

In this essay called “The High Cost of Manliness” written by Robert Jensen, a journalism professor at the University of Texas, in Austin, he tells us that “if we could get rid of the whole idea of masculinity, we have a chance to create a better world for men and women.” He states that it’s not easy to be a man in our society, especially with the demands that come with the dominant conception of masculinity, which is where men are perceived to be tough, competitive and aggressive and must show those qualities in order to prevail as a “real man.” He mentions that DNA does play a big role in a person’s behavior and that our genetic endowment is influenced by culture. The guys that don’t meet these expectations and who are caring and show compassion toward others are often called sissies, fags, or even girls. Jensen states that culture also seems to be linked to a recurring intellectual fad called “evolutionary psychology”, which creates a gender difference between men and women, and thus making it necessary to choose which gender distinctly shows more masculine characteristics than the other. For example he reminds us of the 9/11 World Trade Center tragedy when male firefighters rushed into burning buildings, risking and even sacrificing there lives to help save others, and recognizing this as a sign of strength and masculinity, who is to say that women wouldn’t have done the same if put in that same situation. Jensen explains that the reaction to rush in a burning building to help those in need by those firefighters was “simply human” and for society to automatically assign these type of human qualities to a specific gender is “misguided and demeaning to the gender that is assumed not to possess these qualities.” Yes there are obviously physical differences between men and woman such as size, and reproductive organs, but he says when you think about it, men…

For many years throughout Hispanic/Latino culture it has been the duty of the patriarch in the family to be the primary breadwinner in the family. In both Puerto Rico and Colombia it is the duties of the male not only to provide but to serve as a disciplinarian of the children and also maintain a sense of order in the household as well as the community. There was segregation amongst men and women in society based on their career choices, Machismo is ones sense of being manly and in many households in Colombia. Many women were busy raising the children and tending to the household, while also considering their husbands wellbeing more than their own. Many prominent roles in society and the workforce were held by men, but as time went on and more and more women were entered into the workforce this idea of machismo has dwindled.…

Construction of masculinity represents supremacy and authority on femininities and on another form of masculinity. It replicates and shapes the man’s social association with women and other men. Additionally, masculinity construction reflects the socially dominating gender construction that subordinates feminine together with the other males. As explained in the Coates’ book ‘The world and me,' it is clear that construction of masculinity is a component of survival in many schools. She explains how masculinity dominates over a girl child. For example, “we have not much cared about what happens to our daughters on the yard, either real or imagined.” This means that people do not have even the slightest idea on what happens to girls on black college campuses. Learning in Mecca, one comprehend that love is complicated and the same men who love you are the ones who would not hesitate to hurt. Coates is against the construction…

The job of the first person that wakes up is to open all windows and doors of the house. You can smell the cooking of eggs, and the making of Cuban coffee. Inside of my aunt’s house I smelled the breakfast she cooked, the flowers from her backyard, and the scent of soap from the bathroom. The hills surrounding the town reflected the rising sun’s light on the dewy grass. The sound of horses galloping enters the house as they pass by. Noises gradually increase throughout the day, but as the day dies out so does all the sounds. At night the town is quiet. The streetlights were dim, but the moon was as white as paper and the stars bright as diamonds. Families are in their homes, eating, talking, playing dominoes, or getting ready for bed. I enjoyed nighttime because my family always stayed up late to talk and laugh. Every night was the same routine. I ate, showered, and laughed until I was…

Realization. This is what I learned from the readings. The realization that I am not as culturally aware as I thought. I have always considered myself to be a good nurse. I try to be very thoughtful and caring with my patients. I smile as I interview them, place my hand on their arm or shoulder, and try to find a common ground. This is because as an operating room nurse we don 't get long to connect with our patients before they are off to sleep. Working in central and eastern Kentucky and also growing up here, most of my patients are what I call "Appalachian Americans".…

I woke up in the morning the sun was rising up it was an wonderful sight and I headed down stairs and I made myself a coffee and I had a French toast as I sat in my front porch I was staring out into the clouds as I imagined my life back then as a habitant. Living a life as a habitat is really responsible and I was up to it. I would have to work extremely hard every single day. I went helped cut down Maple, Pine and Oak trees and the logs were built to make cabins and the remainder brush are set to get burned. After I went to the farm good thing my house is close to the farm was usually had a lot of varieties of animals as well as a kitchen garden, where cabbages, onions, and other vegetables were grown, as well as the family’s supply of tobacco. Some crops that we mainly had were wheat and maize, along with oats, barley, and peas. I love that we made this piece of land have wealth in it. On winter we would have to harvest because we would have no chance of growing crops and so we would have to harvest some food and also we would go couple of days without having any food. At the end of the day after our hard work we go and pay taxes to the churches and to the government. Sometimes we would go ten days in a year without getting paid. As I woke up from my day dreaming I imagined how the technology has improved. Life as a habitant is also a pain in the butt. It is dangerous that we worked in bare hands and there could have been diseases and they wouldn’t have known. Also we can tell when we are growing our animals if they are sick and we have professional veterinarian for that. Also if the animal had virus and the food was sent to the consumers they would be in serious danger. We would have to work ten days out of a year and not get paid good thing that every day now I will get paid. We would pay for taxes to the government and if we dot pay properly we would get our house taken away from us. As then I would have to do everything by hand and by my…
