Essay on Man & Science
First, if thou canst, the harder reason guess,
Why form’d no weaker, blinder, and no less?
Ask of thy mother earth, why oaks are made
Taller or stronger than the weeds they shade?
Or ask of yonder argent fields above,
Why Jove’s Satellites are less than Jove?
Of systems possible, if ’tis confest
That wisdom infinite must form the best,
Where all must full or not coherent be,
And all that rises, rise in due degree;
Then, in the scale of reas’ning life, ’tis plain,
There must be, somewhere, such a rank as man:
And all the question (wrangle e’er so long)
Is only this, if God has plac’d him wrong?
Respecting man whatever wrong we call,
May, must be right, as relative to all.
In human works, tho’ labour’d on with pain,
A thousand movements scarce one purpose gain;
In God’s, one single can its end produce;
Yet serves to second too some other use.
So man, who here seems principal alone,
Perhaps acts second to some sphere unknown,
Touches some wheel, or verges to some goal;
’ Tis but a part we see, and not a whole.
When the proud steed shall know why man restrains
His fiery course, or drives him o’er the plains;
When the dull ox, why now he breaks the clod,
Is now a victim, and now Aegypt’s god:
Then shall man’s pride and dullness comprehend
His actions’, passions’, being’s, use and end;
Why doing, suff’ring, check’d, impell’d; and why
This hour a slave, the next a deity.
Then say not man’s imperfect, heav’n in fault;
Say rather, man’s as perfect as he ought:
His knowledge measur’d to his state and place;
His time a moment, and a point his space.
If to be perfect in a certain sphere,
What matter, soon or late, or here or

    (p 370) It is the love for order in mankind that alone prevents our total destruction. Man’s reason is needed to free us from wrong doing and the injustices in life. In addition the main connection seen between modernity and Enlightenment is man’s ability to reason and his optimism.…

    The Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries changed the way educated people looked at the world. A new tone of thinking emerged creating a foundation that would later be built on by enlightened thinkers. Controversial views would soon challenge faith-based ideals, which in turn would test the power and authority of the church. No longer did people listen to beliefs from the past, people looked at new ideas of the future, ideas that made mathematical and logical sense. These new theories opened people's eyes to a new era, the Enlightenment. While architecture, philosophy, science, mathematics and freethought were restricted during the Scientific Revolution, enlightened thinkers freed themselves from religious dogma, allowing for the expansion of human knowledge at a rate never seen before. During the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment period, philosophers believed in breaking away from the established views of the church in order to…

    Albert Einstein, a well-known physicist, wrote a letter to a 6th grade student, Phyllis Wright, in response to her question as to whether scientist pray, and if so, what they pray for. The reason she would have most likely be asking this question is probably because the world at the time is going through tough times such as The Depression and it also being post World War 1 era. Einstein’s response to Phyllis’s question was ineffective because it lacks ethos, pathos, and it did not give a straight forward answer to the question.…

    From a young age it became clear to me that a career in healthcare was the right choice for me. Growing up with a mother who worked both in nurse administration and in healthcare reform, and who’s many friends were all involved in health care, I was emerged in healthcare and the many different careers that someone can chose to pursue. Being given the opportunity to see so many healthcare professionals and see what goes into their day to day lives was something I took for granted prior to taking this class and seeing what it takes to get into their chosen fields and how much work is done prior to being considered a professional in that field. This class has shown me all the preparation and intelligence it takes to go into many of the healthcare fields I have considered going into.…
