Essay On Masculinity
“Masculinity has been taken to the extreme. And taken to the extreme it creates anxiety, homicide, rape, war and suicide”(Farrell 142) Warren Farrell, a founder of the men’s pro-feminist movement, goes into further explanation of how hyper-masculinity has a negative result on the people who admire its throne like appearance. The very popular Gangster-rap genre of present day media possesses an abundant amount of promotion to the display of extreme masculinity by encouraging criminal actions such as homicide, rape, theft, and dehumanizing women. Now that a thorough definition of hyper-masculinity has been explained, one can apply it to the advertisement at …show more content…
The man depicted in the ad is taking a different approach to the common misconception of masculinity by not surrounding himself with half nude females, exemplifying rebellion by the sales of narcotics, or trying to show off his excess amounts of testosterone by promoting violence. These examples have been idolized by younger generations, and it seems that material objects are replacing respectable morals and ethical decisions. “men are being socialized to get female attention by standing out”(Farrell 143), this quote helps explain why men often resort to extreme measures when in the presence of females, but it also has some traditional aspects. In one hand, men take this over board and think they have to express useless action to get a girls attention or that they have to dress nicely and perceive as if they have excessive amounts of money. In the other hand, men take “leaps of faith” for what they believe in, for instance, Henry Ford with his belief to capitalize on motor vehicles or John F. Kennedy for striving to be the President of the United States or the first country on the moon. These famous people stood out by striving for excellence and in return received fame and even interest from

Call it hunkvertising. The objectification of men in advertising (as with women) is not new. Consider icons like the Marlboro Man and Old Spice’s sexy pitchman Isaiah Mustafa. And yet, a disproportionate number of buff, often-shirtless studs are lately popping up in ads for everything from salad dressing to air fresher-in other words, consumer products not normally associated with sexual imagery. As ever, sex sells-even the hirsute sex,…

In Jackson Katz’s video Tough guise: violence, media, and the crisis in masculinity, Katz presents the media as culprits in creating a culture crisis in masculinity. In the video, Katz uses the movie The Wizard Oz as a way to describe the use of the term “tough guise”. In the movie, the Wizard is a nervous, small man who hides behind a curtain to mask his appearance in order for him to be perceived as tough. Thereby, the term tough guise to refer to the different disguises men exhibit to show that they are tough. In the video, several young men, from different walks of life, give adjectives such as physical, powerful, respected, athletic…

‘Representation is the construction and aspects of reality in any medium, especially mass media. It can be presented in speech, writing, still and moving pictures.’ For my research investigation I will be analysing the representation of masculinity in music magazines, and will do this by studying the codes and conventions that cause the representation of masculinity ion two magazines. These magazines are the February 2011 edition of Kerrang and the March 2008 edition of NME, separated by three years to also compare if concepts have changed over the years, I will closely analyse the message these magazines send out to both men and women and how it effects them both, whether it gives them expectations of what to expect in a man or it gives them aspirations to achieve the goal of what these messages put across. As said in the Boys to Men: Media Messages about Masculinity ‘the media’s portrayal of men tends to reinforce men’s social dominance.’…

Construction of masculinity represents supremacy and authority on femininities and on another form of masculinity. It replicates and shapes the man’s social association with women and other men. Additionally, masculinity construction reflects the socially dominating gender construction that subordinates feminine together with the other males. As explained in the Coates’ book ‘The world and me,' it is clear that construction of masculinity is a component of survival in many schools. She explains how masculinity dominates over a girl child. For example, “we have not much cared about what happens to our daughters on the yard, either real or imagined.” This means that people do not have even the slightest idea on what happens to girls on black college campuses. Learning in Mecca, one comprehend that love is complicated and the same men who love you are the ones who would not hesitate to hurt. Coates is against the construction…

Financial success and sexual prowess determines man masculinity. Society views men that has a lot of money, can provide for his family successfully, and has a lot of sex partners as masculine. If a man lacks these particular factors, he would think his masculinity is being threatened. The ideal man is represented through television, where African American men are portrayed to be tough, strong and a “player” and athletes such as Wilt Chamberlain who is looked at as masculine all because he has money and more importantly, he slept with almost 20,000 different women. Therefore, the young men and women who watches television and…

Very often we see women depicted in advertisements wearing very little and trying to seduce the men even though their target market is women. What is the purpose of targeting men with beautiful women, when you are not trying to sell them anything? Simple, it creates an image of what you are supposed to look like to be attractive to a man. Victoria Secret’s commercials constantly do this with women who come out strutting down the runway with one of those looks that says you “Feast on me, I’m here to be looked at, my body is for your eyes.” (Bordo 191) Bordo uses this quote as she describes the young man in the Calvin Klein ad who without being forward about it portrays an image of sexuality. This is contrary to most of the images we usually see and Bordo describes this in an interesting way as she says “His body isn’t a stand-in phallus; rather he has a penis.”…

Toxic masculinity is the idea that social expectations of masculinity and stereotypical attitudes towards men are detrimental to their emotional development. This recognition that gender stereotypes hurt men as well as women is a critical argument for the urgent and continuing need for re-examining gender roles in contemporary society. As a feminist, I appreciate that this article describes in detail how thoroughly ingrained cultural presumptions about gender are in our society and see it as a major component of feminism today.…

What images come to mind when you hear the words masculinity and femininity? According to Michael S. Kimmel (2000), an American sociologist, specializing in gender studies, “… the concept of masculinity is produced within the institutions of society and through our daily interactions” (p 110). From all the advertisements we see on television to the models that appear on the magazines we read, in recent years there has been much discussion on how women feel as though they have a particular stereotype to live up to. Despite this being true, according to Jackson Katz, women are not alone in feeling pressure to fit a certain gender mold. San Jose State University is often celebrated for the rich diversity in the campus community. The meanings of…

Growing up in our society and transforming into various norms, values and beliefs, is revolutionary amongst young men and ladies, and today I will specifically focus on young men. My little brother is 12 years old, he is already expected to “act like a man” or “man up”, and He will be told to show no weakness. This kind of advice will hinder my brother from becoming a “true man”. In “Beauty (Re)discovers the Male Body” Susan Bordo discusses the image of the male body. She starts by talking about how “the naked and near naked female body became an object of mainstream consumption” (168) while the male body has been gone with fashion. She tells about her first time seeing an ad using the male body. It was an underwear ad for Calvin Klein underwear. Bordo explains how this ad was different from other ads in the way the guy posed. In other ads the guys pose would say “Yeah, this is an underwear ad and I’m half naked. But I’m still the one in charge here. Who’s gonna look away first?” (170) In the ad she saw the guy “offers himself non aggressively to the gaze of another” (170). Bordo talks about how guys are not often portrayed like that as more passive and seductive.…

The Nice Jewish boy is a stereotype of Jewish masculinity which circulates within the American Jewish community, as well as in mainstream American culture which has been influenced by the Jewish minority. In the Jewish Journal there is an article describing a young boys Barmitzfa in ‘Today I Am a Man’, by Rabbi Ed Feinstein. He goes on to speak about how ‘Today I am a man. But what do you know about being a man? A Jewish man?’. Strong men as the judge Samson, blessed with his superhuman strength, with aggressive and impulsive behavior and lustful attraction is not what Jewish men are personified in American culture. It is a lingering stereotype that has undoubtedly been satisfied by Jewish men as a ‘weak’ minority. These unanswered questions about Jewish men are only becoming more prominent and involved in society because of the…

I agree that the dominant form of masculinity and femininity are changing, however, this change has been going on for several generations now. Women are becoming the breadwinners while a lot of fathers are becoming stay-at-home dads. Some of the changes that come with women taking on more masculine jobs is the way that they dress. Since many jobs require respect women have gone from wearing dresses and cute hairstyles to wearing pants and cutting their hair off short to appear more dominating. On page 296 in our book the author points out that our society today actually promotes “tough femininity” as a lot of today’s actresses are seen taking on the more masculine…

Gender identity is an individual's personal, the sense of being male or female. Gender identity starts to begin in most children by the age of 3. Although most societies define gender as male and female, many cultures may define gender as neither male or female. Sex refers to biological differences between male and female. The same sex hormone occur in both male and female, but differ in amounts and in the effects that they have upon different parts of the body for example, chromosomes (female XX, male XY), hormones (oestrogen, testosterone). According to the social cognitive theory of gender, children's gender development occurs through being rewarded and punished for gender-appropriate and gender-inappropriate behaviors. From birth male and…
