By default class is based off of income. This is because it decides factors for situations like qualifying for government help. The government can’t just let large percentages of its population fall into poverty and do nothing about it. That is why we have plans put into place to try and prevent this. The middle class naturally is the largest because having too much equality, or separation between the three would lead to obvious problems. But who is in the middle? CNN Money says the middle class “includes everyone but the poorest 20% and the wealthiest 20%.” This sets us roughly between $46,000 - $140,000 per year. This is a huge gap and is why you sometimes hear the terms “upper-middle class” and “lower-middle class.”

middle class is our consumption -or as of more recently, overconsumption. Warren also mentions in her essay that overconsumption is where all the money went to recently and this plays a part in why the classes are so separated. Warren says “Consumer expenses are down, but fixed expenses are up -way up.” By this she means that were not actually spending more on luxury items, but homes and mortgages instead. Consumption helps classify people better because it tells us more than just how much you make. CNN Money mentions that “This more accurately reflects your well-being since income doesn't take into account non-cash government benefits.” Consumption also gives us a better picture when we look and see what exactly the money is being spent on. When more and more people are buying luxury items we can assume that they have the extra money to do so.
The middle class is very real and plays an important role in our economy.
These reasons are both statistcal and fact. Many claim that the the class order is just a “state of mind.” Others say it is based off components like social status. But, these are things that don’t necessarily matter. This is mostly because things like lifestyle, is also based off your income and consumption. In Elizabeth Warren's “The Vanishing Middle Class” she says that “A middle class that is rich with opportunity opens the paths out of poverty.” (Warren, 345) Here, Warren is saying that the stronger our middle class is, the better off our lower class will be. The lower class is dependent on the middle class, and you could arguably say that even the upper class is dependent on the middle class. The middle class is not an opinion based
matter.
The middle class is maybe something we take for granted, although there are a few holes that could be fixed. It is something that will always be there based off of our income and consumption. The middle class is not an opinion. It is based off of statistics and reason. We may have some problems with the current way our middle class is set up, but nonetheless it is a “law” that we must abide by. The middle class is far from vanishing, it sets the bar, the standard that we all look for.
