The importance of the hands is at the heart of Montessori education. Hands are referred to as the instruments of man’s intelligence. When a child is born he does not know what the importance of his hands is but as he grows up and takes up more activities he makes his movements perfect. A child’s brain and hand are connected allowing the child to develop his mental capacity. Through movement is when the child learns and gains knowledge by interactions with the environment and gaining new experiences. The infants hand at first can carry out only imprecise movements such as he can only feel of texture and the sensation of his thumb in his mouth. Babies, in fact, spend nearly half of their waking time moving, either kicking, bouncing, or waving their arms, crawling, standing, etc. While it may appear all this activity is just for the sake of moving, it’s important to realize a baby is never “just moving” or “just playing.” Every action extends the child’s development in some way, this movement could be voluntary or involuntary, it doesn’t really matter they need to move in order to continuing wiring their brain.
‘… The hands... Are connected with mental life... The child’s intelligence can develop to a certain level without the help of his hands. But if it develops with his hands, then the level it reaches is higher, and the child’s character is stronger.’ (DMT 101- PAGE 99)
The man’s nervous system can be broken down into 3 parts which are the brain, the sense organs and the muscles. When these three parts work together they form as a ‘system of relationship’.
‘In order to develop his mind a child must have objects in his environment which he can hear and see. Since he must develop himself through his movement, through the work of his hands, he has need of objects with which he can work that provide motivation for his activity.” (Maria Montessori,’ (THE
