An oppressed group is a group of people that are treated unequally, different, and unjust. Unfortunately, there are various groups of race, sexual orientation, or religion that face oppression. There is one group that also receives it and it is our disabled community. Even with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), they are still discriminated against in various forms. Society does not know their full capabilities and refuse to learn more about them. They are oppressed through the treatment of society, job markets, and healthcare.
In the United States there are, as Munger and Mertens (2011) stated, “approximately 54 million Americans, or one in every seven individuals, have a disability, making people with disabilities the largest minority group on the country” (p. 23). (2013) notes, “they are more likely to experience inequalities in accessing health care and to die from preventable causes, possibly as a result of institutional discrimination within health services” (p. 1). People who are non-disabled are more than likely to receive better treatment from doctors and nurses. They become ill much quicker and die from it too. However, McGuire (2006) states “...it is about identifying the barriers that disabled people must overcome to access health care, and removing them systematically” (p. 9).
Any type of discrimination is unacceptable to any group. However, even with the acts that we put forth in place by government are not always enforced. As people, we have to think about how we would feel if we were given a different treatment just because of who we are. Oppression can be stopped if we work together to do it. By educating ourselves and educating others, we can help make society a better place for those that have to face it.
