Pericles was the leader of Athens and was born in 495BC and died in 429BC. His father, Xanthippus was a political leader who grew up in the family of the Alcmaeonids and his mother, Agariste provided Pericles with political value and a relgious defilement. Growing up Pericles was very bright, his family was wealthy which meant he had access to the best teachers in the whole of Athens. This meant he was able to fully pursue his education. As a young man, Pericles used much of his wealth to support the arts, at school he studied politics, ethics, philosophy and music. He learnt music from the masters of the time, Damo or Phyhocleides and was considered to be the first politcian to have such a great influence on philosophy. Pericles became a …show more content…
He also made it possible for poor men who could no afford to leave their jobs, to do so. This meant men of all social classes were now part of the government. Not only was serving in the governemt a privelage, but also a responsibility. Pericles believed in that very strongly. Pericles biggest aim for athenian society was reforming the Athenian democracy. He introduced many laws such as his citizenship law. This law prevented a non-Athenian mother and the son of an Athenian father from become a full citizen. Pericles aim was to restrain the power of aristocrats where all supreme power is in the hands of one person. In Pericles oration he desribes Athens as “an education to greece” and that the city strives for freedom of the citizen. I believe that Pericles main aim of the oration was to explain to people that Athens was a society worth dying for and wanted Athenians to have pride about their identitiy. Pericles entered 470BC and 8 years later, esatblished a vote in the popular assembly. As a result the vote came to a complete loss of

The “Athenian Golden Age” can best be explained as the peaceful time when Athens was under Pericles’ rule (about 495-429 B.C.). During this time, Athenian culture flourished. Art, socialism, and architecture was thriving. One example was when Pericles delved into the city-state’s funds to do things, such as create temples and buildings, such as the very famous Parthenon. It was said by the great historian Thucydides, that Pericles’ speeches “celebrate the greatness of a democratic Athens at its peak” (“Pericles”, n.d.).…

Pericles, being the man of approved “wisdom and eminent reputation,” was chosen by the state to administer an appropriate eulogy. He begins his Oration by commending all those who contributed their lives to defending the Athenian Empire. Quickly after his appraisal, Pericles transitions into glorifying the democratic institutions in which Athens was founded upon. “And if our more remote ancestors deserve praise, much more do our own fathers, who added to their inheritance the empire which we now possess, and spared no to be able to leave their acquisitions to us of the present generation.” (2.36, PG. 112) Pericles continues by describing how democracy not only exhibits freedom in government, but also in ordinary life, which in turn allowed the public to pursue means of…

Several philosophers and thinkers have graced Athens but none probably have described Athens as vividly as Pericles did with his funeral speech delivered in honor of the martyrs of the Peloponnesian War. This speech was given almost a year after the Peloponnesian War started and its purpose was to inspire both the citizens and the army of Athens. In his speech Pericles describes Athens as a flawless state when compared with its contemporaries. Pericles highlighted the achievements of Athens in almost every sphere ranging from its military prowess to its conduct of justice and equal opportunity to the most ordinary of its citizens regardless of his class or economic status. Pericles proclaims Athens as…

He is very popular and charismatic so he was constantly re-elected without much resistance from the people of Athens. One of the first major change was a reform instituted on the concept of democracy, which at the time was at its infant stage. This new form of democracy--some called radical democracy-- allowed the people themselves had a say in regards to matters of politics, instead of having to first consent with officials of higher positions (Kagan, 1998). Athens in this fifth century was said to be at its peak due to the ruling of Pericles. Firstly, one of the most important changes on Athens was on the heliaia which was the supreme court, and on the boule which was a council made up of about 400 to 500 people (Olejnik, 2010; Howard, 2010).…

Pericles uses the speech of the Funeral Oration to promote Athens. He believed in his people and through this speech he was able to get the people to be proud to be Athenians. Athenians were very proud of their city and its customs. They had a great deal of respect for the warrior class and believed they were top members of their society. Warriors were classified as heroes. The funeral oration was to respect the ones who had died in battle or after battle to build this city into what it had become and praise them for being so dedicated to defending their country. It focused on Athens and the ancestors and how without their past and current dedication of citizens Athens would not be what it was. Pericles truly believed in his citizens even at his death he believed that Athens was truly the best. “And if our more remote ancestors deserve praise, much more do our own fathers, who added to their inheritance, the empire that we now process, and spared no pains to be able to leave their acquisitions to us of the present generation.” (Thucydides) Pericles wanted the people to know that they did something significant not because of their ancestors but because of the lives they led and the goals they set for themselves. He did however feel that their ancestors should be given the honor that they deserved. In his speech, Pericles spoke about the country and the democracy that he and the community all belonged too. He wanted them to know that it is the country that produces the love the people have for it, and it turn the country will encourage its soldiers to be proud to fight for the country and its people. Athens accepted outsiders into the country, however these people learned quickly of the pride that the Athenians held for their country. In conclusion I feel Pericles wanted the people to know that everyone was proud of Athens and that the people of Athens will protect their country when necessary. And those citizens believed in Pericles and their…

I do not think that everything Pericles said in his funeral Oration was true. Pericles goes on and on about how great the Athens city-state had become a strong democratic government. “He also talks about how they accept everyone into their city-state and give them the same rights as the Athens people regardless if they are foreigners”. “Pericles even compares his city-state to that of the Spartans; while using slanderous and defaming words to describe their culture”. Pericles believes from reading his Oration that the Athens are better people because of their equally of all in their city state and the freedom they have given their people.…

A Golden Age is classified by peace, stability and prosperity during a specific period of time. The term “Golden Age” comes from the Greek Mythology, Chryson Genos, which is the first of the five Greek Ages of Man. The etymology shows that Golden Age, by definition, is a time of immense prosperity, harmony, and an abundance of different art and leisure forms. Following the Persian Wars, the Delian League was formed and an exceptional leader emerged. Pericles was born into a wealthy aristocratic family in 495 B.C.E. Then around 462 B.C.E., Pericles was deemed leader of the democratic faction in Athens. Around the same time, a Golden Age was dawning on 5th century Athens. With Greece shifting into its Classical Period of art and the Parthenon rising from the site of a previously destroyed temple in 447 B.C.E, Pericles shaped a sublime Greek democracy. The Golden Age of Pericles included many key innovations such as flourishing art, astonishing architectural feats, and a revolutionary government. Despite the impeccable works of this time, prolonged peace and a steady government proved to be the most significant impression left from the Golden Age of Pericles.…
