Essay On Sandy Hook Shooting
The loss of a loved one is extremely devastating for anybody. It is even more painful when it is caused by someone's malicious actions. The Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting has definitely added fuel to the controversial gun debate. Many school districts in Texas have allowed teachers to be able to carry a gun on campus. Although they will be able to have a gun in their possession when a tragedy like the Sandy Hook shooting occurs, will they really act the way many claim they will and take down the shooter? Is the Second Amendment more important than the lives of our teachers and students? I believe that school districts are capable of protecting their schools in a safer way rather than allowing teachers to carry guns.
The tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary has definitely been an eye-opener for many students and staff in schools. The shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. This horrible event took the life of many innocent students and staff of Sandy Hook. Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza shot twenty children and six adult staff members of Sandy Hook” ("Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting"). It has definitely left many people wondering whether arming teachers with guns will prevent future incidents similar to this from occurring in the future.

A gun does not prevent a person from causing a horrible tragedy. Guns can easily be used inappropriately and possibly even land in the hands of the wrong person. Teachers do not have similar proper training and experience like police officers do. They will not know how to react on the spot if a future shooting occurs. Many can agree that guns are used for protection, but that might not be the case when it comes to school

    If you never heard of this horrible event took it place on December 14th, when armed gunman Adam Lanza allegedly shot and killed twenty-six people , twenty of which were innocent children kindergarten to first grade and six teachers.     On December 14, 2012 twenty six people- 20 students and six adults- were shot and killed at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut. The classes were under way at the school and approximately 700 students were present. Earlier that year, the school principal ordered a new security system installed that requires visitors to be visibly identified and buzzed in. As part of the system, the school locked its doors each day at 9:30 a.m. When the gunman arrived, the door was looked and literally shot an entrance into the building. The school psychologist Mary Sherlach and vice principal Natalie Hammond went out to investigate and only Hammond returned from the hallway alive but wounded. At around 9:35 a.m., announcements were read over the loudspeaker to the students, and shots were heard across the school. Students described being rushed into bathrooms and closets by teachers after hearing the first shots. In one classroom was Lauren Rosseau, a substitute teacher who was filling in for a teacher on maternity leave, the gunman shot all 14 students in the classroom. In another classroom was Victoria Soto who moved her first-grade students away from the door and the gunman burst in and shot her, according to the father of a surviving student, six children were killed in that classroom. Dispatchers from the police station began to take calls from inside the school at approximately 9:40 a.m. and police arrived on scene about 20 minutes after the first calls. Police reported that no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons at any point. The gunman killed himself. He took out a handgun and shot himself in a classroom as law enforcement officers approached. Twenty students, ages 6 and 8, and six adults were killed at the school.     All schools should have several armed and trained staff members to ensure student safety in case of a shooting. Some schools already have some type of security; however, these people are not armed to handle a shooting. The first reason schools should have armed personnel is to protect our students and faculty from these critical situations. Since 2010, there have been 34 school shootings in the U.S. The most recent massacre took place on December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-eight people were murdered. Amongst them were 20 first grade students. Innocent people are killed and no one can do anything until police arrive. Another reason is it will also give students and faculty members a sense of security while on campus. The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. If the criminals know that the schools have these armed members, they might think twice before committing a serious act of violence. One objection might be that there are limited funds as it is for schools and their budgets would not support it. However, if they would use staff members already employed by the schools, the cost would be minimal. Another objection might be that firearms should not be allowed on school property for security reasons. I think the benefits of this would heavily outweigh the risks associated.
