Self-Assessment of Leadership Ability and Development plan
Introduction
Every effective leader has a plan of how they plan to succeed which includes how a personal and professional advancement plan. This essay highlights my personal strengths and weaknesses as a leader and identifies the areas that I need to improve. The essay also includes some of the leadership goals that I believe are my priority and plan to develop and improve on within the next one year. After taking the self assessment on the key traits of know yourself I identified I have strengths in self-management, social awareness and relationship management. In relationship I recognized I’m good at leading and encouraging others in learning and development which is indicative of transformational leadership style (Lussier & Achua, 2010). An example which demonstrates my strengths in relationship management and social awareness is the time I take to build a personal relationship with all the employees who report to me. As a leader I want to make sure that they feel understood in their every day struggles with duties ant that they have support which is easily available and friendly. This trait is very important for being an effective leader. As a leader I need to re-examine different things carefully, seek alternative perspectives, rethink at ideas creatively and get others to look at problems to find solutions. Being intellectually stimulating will help me show better leadership.
Leadership development plan
Having outlined my strengths, weaknesses and areas that I need to improve I need to set goals that will help me in improving my strengths and work on my weaknesses in order to become a more effective leader (Marken, 1999). I have decided to work on four key areas in the next one year that will help me improve my leadership skills. These areas include improving my technical knowledge of corporate strategy, improving self awareness, improving communication and improving on interpersonal skills. The following is my leadership development action plan for the next one year.
