The pain varies in range from patient to patient also. Some describe it as mild while other say their pain is excruciating and unrelenting. They state that they can't place sheets or clothing on the rash without feeling the extreme pain and that the slightest breeze or shower water feel like fire.
The blisters' life span is around 3-4 weeks. They start as round fluid filled blisters and as the eruption loses its intensity they become crusty and dry. This whole transition is associated with a heavy itching sensation. While the pain usually remains on the same level during the transition, the additional symptoms should lose their intensity or even disappear within the first days.
There are some complications to the shingles disease although they are very rare. Ophthalmic shingles can affect the area around the eye and usually comes with eye infections accompanied by pain and, in extreme cases, vision loss. In some severe cases, shingles can attack lungs and other internal organs which may be fatal.
