Essay On Social Norm Violation

For my paper, a social norm violation that I chose was violating personal space. For this norm violation, I and another friend, Mielanie, came with me to help me doing the violation. We needed to go around and found some places or spaces which a person sat alone and no one beside. Then, Mielanie would come and sat beside to that person. Although these places still had several other seats for her to sit, she chose to sit right next to the person in order to see what people would react to the norm that I chose to do the experiment. I decided on this particular activity for my experiment because this activity focused on individuals, so I could choose randomly from many kinds of people. I and my friend often chose big places to perform this experiment.
Mielanie went to her seat and sat immediately so close to her, almost push her out of her seat. The old lady got attention by this action and realized Mielanie was sitting so close to her. Then she looked at Mielanie like a stranger creature with a face of unintelligible. Her face was like, “what are you doing? Why do you invade my seat instead of selecting other seats?” After looking at Mielanie for two or three seconds, she stood up and walked away. Then, we found the second person, it was a man. Mielanie kept doing the same thing to him as she did to the old lady. But the man reacted a little different to the old lady, he was angry when Mielanie sat like that. He also looked at Mielanie but with angry face and left his seat after that. The third person that we found was a lady, this time the lady reacted did not like the old lady or the man. When she saw Mielanie came and sat next to her. She immediately grabbed her purse because she put it beside her. She stared at Mielanie as if Mielanie was a robber while she tried to stay away from Mielanie as far as possible. After that, we did to other persons but most of them reacted like the previous
