The National Association of Social Workers has provided a clear code for social workers to maintain their role as a professional helper. According to the Code of Ethics for social workers, there are six main ethical standards: “1) social workers’ ethical responsibilities to clients, (2) social workers’ ethical responsibilities to colleagues, (3) social workers’ ethical responsibilities in practice settings, (4) social workers’ ethical responsibilities as professionals, (5) social workers’ ethical responsibilities to the social work profession, and (6) social workers’ ethical responsibilities to the broader society” (NASW, 2017, p.7). Two of the ethical principles that I wanted to research further are social workers’ ethical responsibilities to clients and social workers’ ethical responsibilities in practice settings.

I volunteered for an organization called Shepherd Community Center for the service learning class alongside the course The Field of Social Work. Shepherd Community Center works to break the cycle of poverty through an academy and various other resources. While there, I was briefed on the responsible conduct as a volunteer. One of the biggest rule they enforced was to refrain from photography with the children you worked with. When working with the children, they would continuously ask to take pictures, but to remain in accordance with the privacy and confidentiality of Shepherd Community Center, I had to decline.
