President Eisenhower signed an act in 1958 that authorizes the creation of NASA. This action was seen as a huge step in the progression in space and technology in the United States (History.com). A big reason of NASA’s founding was in response to the Soviet Union’s Sputnik launch. Sputnik was a very crucial piece with the first artificial satellite to be launched into space and orbit. The technology displayed with Sputnik was superior to anything America had at the time and this worried the United States and the citizens especially in long distance missiles and nuclear bombings. With the creation of NASA and an already superior Soviet Union in regards to Sputnik the Space Race was born. The Space Race came to an end when NASA landed the first person on the moon winning the technological battle for superiority. On July 20, 1969 Neil Armstrong took a giant leap for mankind and was the first person to land on the moon.
