Introduction
When picturing an individual with a mental disorder, what is the first image that pops into your head? I admit, for me, my first thoughts were of a violent out of control individual with a mission to kill. But then I thought, I have family members with mental disorders and I myself have been diagnosed with OCD, and this description was completely inaccurate in describing my family and me, which must also mean it is inaccurate in describing majority of individuals with mental disorders. My description was stereotypical and extremely ignorant. Mental disorders are anything that affects an individual’s mood, feelings, or emotions, and makes it difficult to function on a daily basis. It includes a survey questionnaire and interview to collect my participant’s information and responses in an ethical, accurate, reliable, and valid manner. My research method will determine whether there is a stigmatization on the physical characteristics of those with mental disorders and whether or not the participant’s stigmatization of mental disorders has been influenced by the participant’s background. I designed my study with the hope that the findings of my research will lead to the continuation of future research on the matter. Gathering both background information and the opinions of my participants can potentially reveal a correlation between the participant’s background and the stigmatization of those with mental disorders. This can show whether or not an individual’s background influences the stigmatization of mental disorders. By understanding where these stigmatizations are influenced by, can help aid in which areas to target to first reduce and eventually end the stigmatization of mental
