The use of symbolism in these two writings is used to depict different hidden themes. In The Alchemist, Santiago’s sheep are a good example of symbolism. The sheep help the boy to understand one of the many languages of the world. The crystal merchant was a symbol of a blessing that God sends to us and was yet another language of the world. The stones Urim and Thummim are a symbol of omens that Santiago continuously finds along the way, that help to boost his confidence level. Omens were one of the main uses of symbolism throughout this novel and helped the boy and the englishman to discover their personal legends. The desert symbolized the obstacles that we must face to realize our personal legends.
In Shakespeare's style in Sonnet XXIX there is a lot of evidence of imagery. Most of shakespeare's poems are similar in structure to this one. “Desiring this man’s art, and that man’s scope.” The author desires something that other men have and believes that these materialistic things will be the key to his happiness. In The Alchemist, the moral of the story is to always go after your dreams and try to pursue your destiny. Even when Santiago lost all his money to a thief, he still went after his own personal legend, remembering the omens and the fulfillment of his journey. When he was working for the merchant and was determined to go back to his hometown and buy back his sheep, he still found his way back to his personal legend. Sonnet XXIX compares to The Alchemist in the sense that the man pushed through in the realization and contentment of what he had. Each of these characters assumed their happiness was easy to find and was something that someone else
