The 18th amendment was not really strong enough to prevent people from drink alcohol; on the contrary, it encourage more people to try it especially those who had never taken it before. Moreover, this amendment made a lot of people to break the law by opening illegal nightclubs. For instance, some saloons were replaced by secret club at night which people can only enter it by using password. Nevertheless, making alcohol was feasible way for farmers because they have various ingredients to make homemade drink. Beside, people can have alcohol for medical purpose. In fact, “by the end of the 1920s there were more alcoholics and illegal drinking establishments than before Prohibition.” [source:Encyclomedia.com]. Over all, even though the Constitution went into effect, the access for alcohol was feasible to everyone.
Another reason is that the prohibition had harmful effects on U.S society. The enforcement of prohibition create Mafia and gangs which raised the crime rate especially in New York and Chicago. For example, Al Capone who is a famous notorious gangsters in Chicago earned a staggering $60 million annually from bootleg operations and speakeasies. Actually, United State had seen a marked increase in death and illness. Due to adulterated substances in the alcohol, a lot of people died poisoning. Also, some people were taking medicine that have alcohol on it which made a harmful impact
