Essay On The Last Line Of The Great Gatsby
The last line of the book coherently has an intense meaning which derives the point of the novel. The Great Gatsby is known for how the American society was back in the 1900s. Not everything worked out as things work out today for many Americans. The last line has a major impact on the novel since the quote relates to the American society today as well. Nick Carraway is the main attention of the novel that opens his mind about his situation in his life. He’s reminded of how he has a cousin living in East Egg named Daisy. When he mentions Daisy, we automatically know she’s a major part of the story as well because otherwise, she wouldn’t have been mentioned as much. The last line can be interpreted as a reminder that nothing goes away even if it’s a constant reminder from the past even if you try to overcome those problems you faced. …show more content…
When Nick says it’s a bad thing to be constantly pulled back into the past, in his situation, it is true. In the first place, he faces obstacles that he did not want to face. The whole conflict with Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby put Nick in a situation of despair. He didn’t want to get into the midst of their problems. Daisy and Tom didn’t want to stay together in their marriage which lead Gatsby to go after Daisy, but that involved Nick’s assistance. After all the commotion that occurs in the novel, Nick keeps dwelling onto the fact of how Gatsby died and he knew his side of the story. He felt as if he were meant to be with Daisy, but then again Daisy does end up going away with Tom. Nick himself isn’t able to pull himself into the future from the past which is bad because if everyone else has moved on (meaning Daisy), then he should move on too. It’s best to look towards the future because many times, it may be the only option some may have

In Chapter 5, Daisy and Gatsby are reunited in Nick’s house and then Gatsby shows Daisy around his house. Gatsby attempts to reward Nick with money for helping bring him and Daisy together again, “Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time but you might pick up a nice bit of money.” This shows how Gatsby is not used to people being hospitable towards him without wanting anything in return. It also demonstrates how Gatsby thinks he has to buy Nick’s loyalty in the hope that by bribing Nick with money, he won’t tell Tom about his meeting with Daisy. Nick refuses claiming, “I’ve got my hands full,” This reveals that Nick is very class conscious as he thinks he is above receiving money for something he has done. It also shows that he is aware of the corrupt criminal world that Gatsby is involved in because he doesn’t want to take the chance of getting involved in the same world as Gatsby.…

Famous writer Douglas H. Everett once said, “There are some people who live in a dream world, and there are some who face reality; and then there are those who turn one into the other”. This quote evidently connects to “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, as Jay Gatsby himself refuses to face the fact that Daisy, his past – lover, may have moved on from their prior relationship. Instead, Gatsby devoted many years of his life trying to make his fantasy relationship with Daisy a reality. Gatsby’s interest of winning back Daisy quickly evolved into an obsession, where he fantasized of rebuilding the love they once shared. This obsession explains the contrast Gatsby’s behavior before and after he finally meets Daisy, where he was extremely anxious and insecure before reuniting with Daisy and then over determined and domineering afterwards.…

After Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy didn’t have much fun at his party Nick replies, “You can’t repeat the past,” which Gatsby confidently replies with, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” (110). This exchange is evidence that Gatsby is living in the past and is unable to see that his past has become a fantasy. At this point Gatsby has blown his past image of Daisy into something much larger and more magnificent than she is able to be in reality. Gatsby has twisted his idea of the past so much that he has gained extremely high expectations for his future. Nick’s comment is foreshadowing that Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy will never be lived out. Along with this, Gatsby’s reply foreshadows his heartbreak and foolish feeling he suffers after realizing that Daisy has left him for…

The Jazz Age was depicted as an era of freedom, revolution, fantasy, and mostly, corruption. The inhabitants of America during the time were jubilant over the victories of World War I and very much enjoyed the wealth brought on by the spoils of war. Many were busy as they tried to build big businesses to monopolize the flow of money, and legalities did not matter as long as the people got what they wanted. The people sought to use the new-gained wealth to make their fantasy ideals to become a reality and the “American Dream” was the popular phrase used to describe their mindsets. Gatsby is longing to reunite with his love, and he spends a fortune to have it all setup and does not even stop at the face of her husband. To put the novel into a sum, the people of the Jazz Age flare up their monotonous life with corrupted love and the most unethical society and class hierarchy built on the flow of money.…

Not only does Nick doubt that Gatsby and Daisy know each other, but they were lovers some time before. Hearing that Carraway was close to Daisy, Gatsby made Carraway causally set a date for both him and Daisy at Caraway’s house so that Daisy’s husband, Tom, does not find out. Because Carraway is a people-pleaser, her agrees and sets them up. After Nick tells Daisy to meet at his house, there is a shift in Gatsby’s behavior. He goes from a strong and confident man to a “pale” “little boy,” wearing his wealth on his body. Nick’s comparison of Gatsby to a little boy conveys how Gatsby’s vulnerability is shining through in the situation. Although Gatsby is more than comfortable with the hundreds of people he throws parties for, Daisy is the one person that releases the person Gatsby has built for himself. He is finally a human being just like any other. Since Daisy did not know Gatsby was going to be joining them, she was stunned at how many years it has been since Gatsby and Daisy’s last…

    Great Gatsby's Death

In the novel The Great Gatsby written by Scott Fitzgerald, Gatsby seems to be misusing the past in order to enliven the present. The book is set in the early twenties after World War 1 when many writers were losing faith in America. I think that Nick is more of a candidate of the “Lost Generation,” rather than Gatsby because Nick finds it “impossible to remember,” (110) while Gatsby keeps hope of having Daisy as his own. What Nick is trying to remember is a story of true love. But Gatsby has love memories of the past before the war that were important and fond to him. That is why he kept them so close to his heart. The past is haunting Gatsby and preventing him from moving on. In the end, it actually causes Gatsby’s death.…

The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, portrays a society of high social standings, immense wealth, and love. This can be classified as the American Dream. If an individual is determined, that individual has a reasonable chance and holds the hope for acquiring wealth, and the happiness and freedoms that go with it. In essence, the American Dream gives the chance to gain personal fulfillment, materially and spiritually. In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the American Dream as an unachievable illusion, one which is ultimately detrimental to the novel’s central character, Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby tries to attain happiness, Daisy’s love, which is all he wants, but ends up failing. Evidently, Gatsby may have achieved the definition of the American Dream, but at a personal standpoint, he failed to accomplish what he was truly aiming for.…

This quote is important in the book because it explains why the characters act the way that they do. This quote tells us that the characters pursue visions of the future that are set by their pasts which was then proved at the end of the book when Nick says “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther. . . And then one fine morning. (Pg 180) So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past” (pg 180) Making us the boats beating against the current. And, unfortunately, some of the boats are doomed to sink. (and or Gatsby, Daisy,…
