Essay On The Parable Of The Good Samaritan
A once great and numerous people that has since then died out. These people would be the
Samaritans, a group of people that lived during the time of the Old Testament. They were both
Jewish and not Jewish and had a very unique religion, which caused them to be hated by the
Jews. The Samaritans were also used in one of Jesus’ parables along with the Jews to teach a lesson on who is your neighbor and how you should love and be kind to them. When thinking of the Samaritans it is hard to not also think of the Jews; the two groups were often talked about together, mostly about their apposition to each other.

Before information can be given on the Samaritans, their backstory of how they came to be must be told. The kingdom of Israel

On one instance, when the Jews came back to
Jerusalem to rebuild the temple, the Samaritans offered to help rebuild, but this offer was scornfully rejected by the Jews.

Now understanding the tension between the Jews and Samaritans it is clear why Jesus chose these two groups for the Parable of the Good Samaritan. In this story there is a man, he was
Jewish, who was walking on a road to Jericho from Jerusalem. All of a sudden he was attacked by robbers, who stripped him of his clothes, beat him, and left him there to die. Now there was a priest going down this same road, however when he saw the man lying there he crossed the road and continued on his way. Later a Levite was going down the road, but once he saw the man he too crossed the road and continued on his way. Finally there was a Samaritan man traveling down the road. When he saw the man lying there to die he took pity on him and bandaged his wounds. The Samaritan put the wounded man on his donkey, took him to an inn, and took care of him. He left money for the man to be taken care of and planned to even come back to

“When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and He and His disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to Him, went out and asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ ‘Jesus of Nazareth,’ they replied. ‘I am He,’ Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground. Again He asked them, ‘Who is it you want?’ And they said, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’ ‘I told you that I am he,’ Jesus answered. ‘If you are looking for me, then let these men go.’ This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: ‘I have not lost one of those you gave me.’ Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) Jesus commanded Peter, ‘Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?’ Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound Him and brought Him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high…

The Parable of the Good Samaritan that is found in the Gospel of Luke, exhibits the aspects of the Kingdom of God. In this parable a samaritan sees someone that is injured and seeing this moves him to have pity and takes care of him. The samaritan takes the mans pain in as his own pain and wants to help him. By looking at this we can also see the principle of mercy that Jon Sobrino discusses in the writing. The principle of mercy is not just feeling bad for someone is it taking someone else’s pain and feeling the pain as if you were that person. There are three parts to this principle; see, one must see the suffering going on around you; internalize, you have to let yourself be moved by what you see; lastly is re-act, you have to do something…
