The Potion Diaries takes place in a futuristic world that is divided between those who are Talented and those who are ordinary. Samantha lives in the Kingdom of Nova, but she travels around the world to places like Bharat and Zambi. Zambi’s wild jungles are lush and green. Bharat has snowy mountains.
The main character in The Potion Diaries is Samantha Kemi, who never gives up. Samantha is an ordinary teenager with extraordinary alchemy skills. Her younger sister, Molly, is Talented. Samantha is tall and wears common clothes. Samantha is very smart and brave. On page 387, Princess Evelyn compliments Samantha’s cleverness “ Do you know how long it took me to find a recipe for a love potion? Years. I mean, to …show more content…
figure out about unrequited love… That takes skill.” Sam is also very determined. In chapter nineteen, Samantha makes a comeback by finding the ingredient she was missing.
The Potion Diaries tells the story of an underdog using her skills to save the princess and earn back her family’s honor.
First, Princess Evelyn accidentally poisons herself with a love potion instead of Zain Aster. The royal family then calls for a national Wilde Hut for teams to find an antidote. Samantha Kemi and her Finder, Kristy, accept the challenge. They obtain the first ingredient, full moon oyster merpearl by tricking Samantha’s Grandfather. Next, the Kemi team goes to Bharat in search of the next ingredients: eluvian ivy and pink jasmine. With the help from another team, they acquire the ingredients. Samantha heads to Bharat’s snowy mountains next for abominable fur, but she gets caught in an avalanche. With the help of Zain Asten, one of the competitors from the ZA Corp team, they make it out with the fur. Finally, The Kemi team needs unicorn tail for the next ingredient. Samantha’s sister, Molly, obtains the tail and almost dies in the process. Finally, Samantha delivers her potion to the princess and saves
her.
One of the best parts of this book was when Zain removed his glamour to reveal the real him to Samantha. He’s always kept his glamour on, so removing it was really hard for him. This part convinced me that Zain is brave and trustworthy.
Amy Alward’s use of personification throughout the story is very effective. On page 247, Alward writes, “ I reach up the wall, my back screaming.” Another example her use of personification is on page 163, “The roots of the jasmine vine drank up her blood and now its petals are tinged with pink.” This method helps the reader visualize what is happening in a creative way.
Although the antidote was just the original potion except for one ingredient, which was kind of a disappointment, the story was still interesting and entertaining. I liked the characters and how Samantha Kemi used her wits to win the Hunt. I would recommend this book to anyone with a craving for an intense adventure.
