Houses were non-electric. Aside from cleaning, cooking, care, and orders, women were in charge of the everyday needs of a family. The heat and lights came from fire. A woman would have to manage the fire and keep it going all day and night, unless there was a maid to help. All women would learn those things before becoming a wife, but the ones who did not become a wife had to also learn how to take care of others people’s houses and children. Single women ironically possessed more freedoms than married women. They had their own legal identity, they could enter contracts, and could own property.
