Unit 3 Assignment: The Legalization of Marijuana In 1970 when the Controlled Substance Act was in the process of being drafted, marijuana was placed in Schedule I category with the advice from the Assistant Secretary of Health; Roger E. Egeberg. In the United States when drugs are placed on the list of Schedule I, this means the drug or other substance has a high potential for abuse. Drugs or substances placed of the list of Schedule I are classified as extremely dangerous with the ability to severe psychological or physical dependence. The Commission decided to proceed with their idea to legalize marijuana for medical purposes, and completed and presented their report entitled, “Marijuana: A Signal of Misunderstanding” to Congress. A year prior, before the Commission decided to voice their commendation to have the drug reclassified. In 1971 the white house tapes of President Nixon voicing his strong opinion against having the drug reclassified was released. Nixon believed that the reclassification of the drug and having it, utilized for medical purpose would not be beneficial for the citizens of the United States. As a citizen of the United States I feel that if the drug can medically help people that have illnesses then it should be reclassified and legalized. However, I feel that their need to be rules in place for patients that use the drug so it isn’t abused. Physicians that have patients that would benefit from the drug need to ensure that the proper screenings are performed. These screening should help determine if the drug will be benfitcal and help it’s users with their
