2 August 2010 Conveying a Purpose by the Use of Tone in Essay Writing
The tone of an essay reveals to readers who the author and gives them a sense of the writer's personality. Tone tells the reader why the author is writing about their chosen subject. Both Barry and Pollitt are comparing the differences in men and women but their reasons for it and outlook about it vary greatly. Barry seems to celebrate these differences and make light of them while Pollitt explores the causes and effects of the differences. Katha Pollitt’s is most effective at revealing herself and her views through the tone of her essay.
Tone can be set from the first sentence written or a single word used in one incidence in a paper. Tone lets the reader know if the writer intends to be humorous or serious, casual or formal. The words an author chooses to use in their writing leads

After reading the opening sentence she seems put off and perhaps even disgusted and sarcastic in her tone. Pollitt maintains this throughout her essay. She uses phrases like “we don’t need”, “It hasn’t even”, “I’m at a” and “just don’t understand”. Pollitt’s continuing use of contractions was a good technique. It allowed the essay to speak to the everyman or more correctly the everywoman. If she had chosen to write in a formal tone this same essay would read as a mere rant by a feminist, leftist with a hidden agenda instead of being able to maintain the disguise of nothing more than an informative essay published in the New York

The author would use the tone to convey his attitude towards the subject. Additionally, the author also uses a different kind of tones to indicate his certain purpose of the story. The readers will get a different kind of mood while reading a story. For an example, while I read "The Rattler" I got different emotions and feels that were usually inconsistent according to the situation in a story such as frighten, scare, sadness and enraged. In one of the storylines said, "I listened for a minute to this little song of death. It was not ugly, though it was ominous. It said that life was dear, and would be dearly sold. And I reached into the paper-bag bush with my hoe and, hacking about, soon dragged him out of it with his back broken." Basically,…

The writer tone is depressing, negative and an almost malicious undertone. The writer starts the essay off making the reader feel like she is upset with her father is living due to being forced to care for her aging parents. She continues thought the essay to write in a somber view of caring for her aging parents. A good example is when she sates that she is like a Kafka character who kills himself even though he has much to live for. Another statement the writer used to build tone in the essay was one that could be deemed as morbid: I almost don’t know what I envy Bernard Cooper for more—his incomparable literary genius or the fact that his father is dead. Wishing one’s parent was dead goes against all social norms, this leads to the tone of the essay being grim, dark and depressing. The use of negativity and resentment ensure the readers would be aware of the writers tone. The writer continues to develop this tone by inserting statements that seems against social norms, for example: With a sudden angry snort, my father woke up. I won’t say I wish I had hit him over the head with a frying pan to finish the job when it seemed we were so, so close. This showed in a passive aggressive way that she seems to want her father to die. Another example of the writer using a negative tone is when she is discussing Thomas, her Dad’s care giver who stated that he could help her dad live longer and she wrote ”Oh my God—how could he say…

A Doll’s House, by Henrik Ibsen, portrays a young married woman, Nora, who plays a dramatic role of deception and self-indulgence. The author creates a good understanding of a woman’s role by assuming Nora is an average housewife who does not work; her only job is to maintain the house and raise the children like a stereotypical woman that cannot work or help society. In reality, she is not an average housewife in that she has a hired maid who deals with the house and children. Although Ibsen focuses on these “housewife” attributes, Nora’s character is ambitious, naive, and somewhat cunning. She hides a dark secret from her husband that not only includes borrowing money, but also forgery. Nora’s choices were irrational; she handled the situations very poorly in this play by keeping everything a secret. The way that women were viewed in this time period created a barrier that she could not overcome. The decisions that had the potential to be good were otherwise molded into appalling ones. Women should have just as many rights as men and should not be discriminated by gender; but they should also accept consequences in the same way without a lesser or harsher punishment.…

    Hemingway Tone Analysis

Although tone is an extremely complicated issue to analyze, it is one of the most elementary literary elements. Like a tone of voice, the tone of a story may communicate joy, anger, love, sorrow, and contempt. It shows the feelings of the author, so greatly that we can sense them. The tone adds to the overall feeling, and effectiveness portrayed in any literary work. Those feelings may be similar to the feelings expressed by the narrator of the story, but sometimes they may be dissimilar, even sharply opposed. The characters in a story may be regarded even as sad, but we sense that the author regards it as funny, as in Ernest Hemingway's "A Clean, Well Lighted Place", where Hemingway purposively "sets up the aura" of an apathetic tone; using diction, imagery, and a third person point of view, by not directly confronting any emotions (Edel 270).…
